Cornwall Council has announced it will host the Armed Forces Day national event in Falmouth in June 2023. Show The town will host the fifteenth Armed Forces Day national event next year and will welcome hundreds of military personnel and their families to the town, along with parades, flag raising and fly pasts. The announcement was made after Scarborough hosted this year's event with hundreds of Armed Forces personnel, air displays, and three Royal Navy ships anchored off the Yorkshire coast. The council says Falmouth is an 'enduring supporter' of the Armed Forces, and will welcome military personnel from across the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force to its streets, joined by what is predicted to be thousands of well-wishers. Falmouth has been selected as the 2023 host following the event in Scarborough this year. Falmouth is the perfect destination to showcase the outstanding work of the Armed Forces past and present and pay tribute to serving troops, veterans, cadets, and service families. "Serving personnel and veterans of our Armed Forces community will be assured of a very warm welcome and an event that thanks them for their commitment to keeping our country safe.” Cornwall Council Leader, Linda Taylor, said: "I am absolutely delighted that Cornwall has been chosen to host the 2023 national Armed Forces Day. "I know that Falmouth, with its strong historic military links with the Army and the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, will mount a spectacular celebration of our military and lead the rest of the country in honouring our Armed Forces personnel past and present." "Armed Forces Day is a time to give thanks to those who serve our country, and to inspire future generations. This is a fantastic event, and one that I know will be greatly welcomed by our local communities." Armed Forces Day is a day of paying tribute to and honoring members of the military. In the United States it is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in May. The day was created in 1949 to replace and unify formerly separate celebration days for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. However, within the respective services the separate days are still observed. Armed Forces Day is not a public holiday in the United States. U.S. Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson hoped to bring a sense of unity to the branches. Each year there is a theme. The theme of the first Armed Services Day was “Teamed for Defense.” Early celebrations were marked with parades and air shows around the country. President Truman said in the first Armed Forces Day address, “it is the first parade of preparedness by the united forces of our land, sea and air defense.” One of the largest celebrations was in Washington, D.C., which had more than 10,000 troops and cadets from every branch. Today, it is celebrated with military exercises on land, sea and in the air to honor members of the US military and to show off their state-of-the-art equipment to the civilian population it protects. Many people will display flags on their homes or donate to the USO who serves active-duty military and their families. In 1961 President John F.
