The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise took the world by storm starting in the early 2000s. The movies, based on Walt Disney’s theme park attraction of the same name, take place in a fictionalized version of the Golden Age of Piracy.

In total, the franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion in the Box Office. It’s the 14th highest-grossing film series of all-time and is the first film franchise to produce two or more movies that grossed over $1 billion. So to say the series was a success would be an understatement!

And today it may not be as popular, but it still has a very loyal fanbase. Even diehard fans may not remember the exact order of the films. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back!

All the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in order

The film series has a total of five movies, as well as one short film. The swashbuckling tales all started with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Here’s a list of the all the films in order based on release date:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
  • Short film: Tales of the Code: Wedlocked (2011)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

If you want to watch the movies in order based on story, all of them were already released that way. The exception is the franchise’s short film, Tales of the Code: Wedlocked. The movie actually serves as a prequel to The Curse of the Black Pearl.  It explains why Jack Sparrow’s boat is seen sinking in the first movie, why Scarlett and Giselle are mad at him, and how Cotton lost his tongue.

Dead Men Tell No Tales apparently wasn’t the end of the successful franchise. Back in 2020, the producer of the films Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider that the first draft of the script for a sixth film was almost finished. Since then, we haven’t gotten any updates though. Also in the works is a female-lead spin-off film which is separate from the sixth film being developed. Hopefully we get news on both of these soon!

Where to watch the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

Currently, there’s a few options to watch the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The best and easiest way is to stream all five films on Disney+. You can also rent them all through Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Google Play Movies & TV.

Tales of the Code: Wedlocked is the only movie not available to stream or rent. The short film was a part of the home-video release of On Stranger Tides which includes a 15-disc collection and the short film. So that’s the only way to currently watch the prequel.
