Who came 2nd Big Brother 2022 Australia?

After 62 drama-filled and highly competitive days in the Big Brother house, Reggie Bird has been crowned the winner of Big Brother Royalty Vs New Contenders.

The nail-biting and highly-competitive season drew to a close with Bird taking home the $250,000 cash prize — money she says she's using to "put a roof over [her family's] heads".

The fan favourite is the first ever Big Brother contestant to win the reality TV show twice. As the last ‘royalty’ contestant standing, she has spent a total of 148 days in the house.

"I can't believe it, Sonia," she said, moments after the announcement. "Thank you, thank you to everyone that voted for me. I hope I did you all proud."

This year's runners-up were newbie contestants Taras Hrubyj-Piper, who described himself as "half Buddha and half Steve Jobs," and Johnson Ashaka, a self-confessed Big Brother super fan.

Bird has been applauded for playing an honest and authentic game. She's previously expressed that her strategy was to "be [herself]."

"Going into Big Brother this time, I've got two beautiful children and I really wanted to do this for them. When I walked into this house, I knew that I just had to win no matter what."

The legally blind Hobart local was the first-ever woman to win Big Brother Australia and has since become an advocate for disability support. "I'm here to prove to people that having a disability doesn't stop you from achieving goals," Bird previously said.

2022 has been the year of celebrating Big Brother's 21st birthday in Australia — a year that host Sonia Kruger has dubbed the "biggest game ever”. Team challenges, changing alliances, differing strategies — this year’s Big Brother was nothing short of entertaining.

There wasn't a shortage of drama on the grand finale live stage, either, with the first evictee Josh Goudswaard making a dig to the returning cast — "I [didn't] want to do this show, aren't all these Big Brother has-beens has-beens? Evidentally not”.

It was a season of romance and heated reunions. The Tully Smyth, Anthony Drew and Sam Manovski love triangle had us all hyped up — though Drew and Manovski confirmed that they have since broken up.

"We came out of the house and got to know each other in the real world," Manovski said. "Drew lives in Melbourne, I live in Queensland. We are very  different, so [it] just didn't work out.”

Bird stakes a claim in the existing line-up of 14 Big Brother Australia winners which includes last year’s Marley Biyendolo, and returning contestants Tim Dormer and Trevor Butler.

Australia’s most celebrated housemate and 2003 winner, Reggie Bird, is the winner of Big Brother 2022 after defeating Taras Hrubyj-Piper and Johnson Ashak in a public vote during the nail-biting live Grand Final.

The 48-year-old mother of two from Queensland walks away with $250,000 and the glorious title of greatest housemate of all time, becoming the first-ever housemate to win Big Brother twice anywhere in the world.

Celebrating the win, an emotional Reggie said:

“I can’t believe this. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

As some of the series’ biggest names such as Reggie Bird, Trevor Butler, Tully Smyth, Anthony Drew, Tim Dormer returned to the digs they once called home, they faced off against fresh faces - with many of the Royalty housemates being ousted by cunning newbies.

As our final three - Reggie, Taras and Johnson - battle it out to see who will reign supreme, some are convinced they already know who will be the last one standing.

Flocking to Sportsbet, Big Brother viewers have placed their bets on returning housemate Reggie Sorensen (formerly Bird) to be victorious, with odds of $1.42 on both Sportsbet hinting she just might be our winner this year.

As for the runners-up, Sportsbet is currently predicting two newbies will take out the second and third places respectively.

At present, Big Brother super-fan Johnson Ashak sits in the runner-up position with odds of $3.00, while musician Taras Hrubyj-Piper is in third place with $10.00.

It makes sense that fans are convinced Reggie will beat out the other housemates, considering she’s done it before in 2003 – winning $250,000 in prize money.

But the triumph hasn’t come with boundless glitz and glamour, with the star having had quite the harrowing journey since leaving the reality show.

Just a year after her season of Big Brother, Reggie was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa and is now legally blind. "I've lost my peripheral vision and I’ve got 10 degrees of central vision left. I have no night vision," she said during The Daily Edition in 2016.

Reggie also suffered a stroke in 2017 as a result of a heart condition.

"They told me I have a hole in my heart. I was literally heartbroken. But it makes sense now, why I'm always so tired and unwell, and what caused my stroke last year," she divulged to Woman’s Day the following year.

Unfortunately, the health conditions extend past Reggie’s own, with her youngest son Lucas grappling with cystic fibrosis.

Reggie welcomed her first child, Mia, four years after Big Brother with her second husband, Dale Sorensen. Three years after that, the couple had Lucas.

The mother has previously explained to Now To Love that the condition comes with daily physiotherapy and medication to help Lucas digest food and break down mucus from his lungs.

"It's mentally and physically draining on Lucas so I have to stay strong for him. It's a constant battle to try to get weight on him so he has to drink supplements and have a diet high in calories and fat. I hope he will live past the 37 years of expected time.”

As well as dealing with the financial aspects that come with these health conditions, Reggie was also financially burdened.

"I left everything and moved to Sydney. I couldn't get a job for about two years after the show because no one would take me seriously. I spent all the money I had left on rent…” Reggie told news.com.au’s Not Here To Make Friends podcast.

What’s more, after a man reportedly claimed to be a TV producer with the means to fund the pilot of a new travel show she was to star in, Reggie forked over $40,000 to the fraud.

"I thought it was legit. He said he didn't have money and asked to borrow five grand and another five grand and then it all snowballed," she told the podcast.

The Big Brother alum even nearly faced eviction in 2017, telling her story to Woman's Day.

“I’m so scared. One day your kids are cuddled up and warm and safe and just like that, it could all be gone. I owe my kids a warm bed and a safe house, that's not too much to ask, is it?

“It's hard to believe I became known as the girl who survived multiple evictions in the Big Brother house, to 14 years later be faced with the real thing,” she added. "I’ve been having nightmares ever since, wondering where we're going to go.”
