Who owns Great Southern Bank Australia?

Today, Great Southern Bank becomes the new trading name of CUA, Australia’s largest customer-owned bank.

The company has also unveiled a new logo on its 75th anniversary which keeps the colour teal at its heart.

The changes are an essential part of Great Southern Bank’s purpose-led strategy of helping all Australians own their own home.

“This is the tip of the iceberg for Great Southern Bank,” says Great Southern Bank CEO Paul Lewis. “We are rolling out a series of new products and customer service initiatives to help make the dream of home a reality.

“We know that home ownership can seem an insurmountable challenge for some young people, so we have created a series of valuable new services and offerings to help everyone on their journey.

“For some people that might be using rent history to show their ability to saving up for a deposit on an apartment, it could be buying a family home, or buying a property for your children. Great Southern Bank can be there for every step.”

Great Southern Bank will remain passionately customer-owned, with all profits reinvested into new initiatives, leading products, and in providing outstanding customer service.

“We are a vibrant alternative to the big four banks,” says Mr Lewis. “The difference is we reinvest 100 per cent of our profit back into our customers, rather than paying that money out to shareholders.

“We decided to change our name because our research showed us clearly that half of the country doesn’t know what a credit union is,” says Mr Lewis. “Now everyone will know that we can challenge the big four banks, without being one of them.”

Great Southern Bank’s branches are changing to the new branding over the coming weeks, starting with a refurbished Melbourne CBD branch in William Street.

As a customer-owned bank, we're created by customers for customers and that's why customers are at the heart of everything we do.

Our story

Our story began back in 1946 when we saw an opportunity to give Australians a fairer deal. We challenged the banking status quo at the time by providing responsible and affordable lending. Through a series of mergers with like-minded credit unions and community groups, we created the powerful force that is Great Southern Bank today. This growth and success lets us reinvest in our business, deepen our relationships with our customers, champion great causes, and build stronger communities. We’ve changed a lot over the years - and today we offer much more than just lending - but we’re still driven by a passionate and genuine desire to enrich our customers’ lives.
