Why is crime so high in redding, ca

In an effort to engage the community in current crime trends and highlight the efforts of local law enforcement, the Redding Police Department is providing a new online, interactive Crime Map at the link below.

This Crime Map is the public crime map that connects law enforcement with the community to improve public safety. The Crime Map can be used to better understand where and what type of crimes are occurring locally and you can view and filter crime data to become better informed about crime activity in your area.

When exploring the map please be aware that privacy rights preclude certain crimes from being displayed on this map if they are, or are associated, with the following crimes: child abuse crimes, sex crimes, and domestic violence crimes.

In order to protect the privacy of victims, approximate times and locations are depicted on the Crime Map and the icons do not represent the exact location where an incident occurred.

The "Submit a Tip" feature on the Crime Map is not currently implemented. Please contact the Redding Police Department at (530)225-4200 or Shasta County Secret Witness to submit tips.

Crime Statistics

The Redding Police Department says violent crime peaked in 2010 and 2016, and has been trending down since 2016.

REDDING, Calif.- The Redding Police Department released part of its annual crime statistics, showing that violent crime was up to 536 cases in 2021.

The department’s crime analyst, Mike Murphy, said he started compiling these statistics to look at the misconception that “crime in Redding is the worst it’s ever been.”

Murphy found that violent crime peaked in 2010 and 2016, with 793 and 720 cases respectively, and since 2016 violent crime has gone down every year other than 2021.

While there were 23 more violent crimes in 2021 than the year before, the 536 cases were the fourth lowest for the year since 2006.

Murphy says the perception that crime has never been worse in Redding could be due to their own social media presence.

“If you see reports of things the Redding Police Department’s doing and what other law enforcement agencies up here are doing on social media, on your feed all the time, that matters. That has an effect on you,” said Murphy.

The department said it was glad to see violent crime on a downward trend and hope this will reassure people that the department is doing everything it can to protect the community.

Action News Now spoke with several people about their perception of crime in Redding.

Many of them were surprised that violent crime wasn’t higher than it is.

Some people, like Jim Eppstein, said the police do a good job making sure the community is safe.

“I don’t feel threatened as much as I would in Sacramento just because of the size and that, but the police are really good at response times for your violent crimes here,” said Eppstein.

Murphy told Action News Now that there isn’t a specific reason for the slight uptick in violent crimes.

Of the four types of crimes that count in this statistic, the only one that significantly went up was aggravated assault.

Murphy says one of the reasons there could be an increase is that there are many nuances in how each aggravated assault is categorized.

For example, weapons used in aggravated assault cases can range from a gun or knife to keys or even books.

“We’ve had, over a 40-year period, we’ve had peaks and valleys,” said Murphy. “Understanding that I think, helps people understand generally what’s going on in the community.”

Murphy said one of the biggest surprises was that robbery was down 20%, and says underreporting could be the cause.

Last week, Action News Now spoke with local business owner Tim Gray who had around $1,000 in merchandise stolen.

He didn’t report the incident, saying he was discouraged since nothing happened the last time he reported what happened.

“The cops can’t be everywhere and we know that, but it does suck that we deal with this and we have no help, I feel like we have no help at all,” said Gray.

“Underreporting happens in almost every crime category,” said Murphy. “We always encourage people to report crime when it happens. It helps us in a lot of ways including determining if there are crime trends.”

The police department said that if they can identify crime trends, they can act appropriately by adding more patrols in certain areas or being able to easily arrest repeat offenders.

Murphy said the best thing victims of a crime can do is call into the station to report what happened.
