One of my friends had a TV + internet connection from AT&T because he had been an AT&T fan ever since he got a phone connection from them.

He would always tell me how good it was every time the topic of internet speeds came up when we talked, which was why I was surprised to see him call me for help.

The light labeled Broadband on his AT&T gateway flashed red, and he couldn’t access the internet.

To help him out, I went on the internet to look for fixes and ended up at AT&T’s support pages.

I also checked out a few user forums to see how other people on AT&T managed to fix this issue.

I intended to make this guide with the information that I found from my research so that you can try fixing your AT&T gateway when its Broadband light goes red.

When the Broadband light on your AT&T modem goes red, it means that it has lost its internet connection. To fix this, you can try checking your cables for damage or restarting your router. If that doesn’t work, try resetting your router.

Read on to know why you are getting the red light on your AT&T gateway, as well as the easiest way to upgrade the firmware and reset your AT&T modem.

What Does The Red Broadband Light Mean?

Why is my ATT fiber router blinking red?

The red Broadband light on your AT&T gateway means that the gateway is having issues connecting to the internet.

There are a few reasons why the light can go red, like if the AT&T service in your area is experiencing an outage or a hardware issue with your equipment.

This can also happen if there are software bugs with the router or gateway, but fixing all of these issues is pretty easy enough to do, and you can complete them in a few minutes.

Power Cycle The Gateway or Modem

Power cycling means restarting your modem and cycling all the power out of it.

It can help fix some hardware or software issues, and if such a bug caused the red light, trying this would resolve the problem pretty easily.

To power cycle your AT&T gateway or router:

  1. Turn the device off and unplug it from the wall adapter.
  2. Wait for at least 1-2 minutes before you plug the device back in.
  3. Turn the device on.
  4. Let all the lights on the device turn on.

When your gateway or router finishes turning on, see if the Broadband light goes red again.

Update Gateway Firmware

Why is my ATT fiber router blinking red?

Sometimes buggy firmware can suddenly stop the gateway from connecting to the internet, and if your gateway hasn’t been updated in a while, it could very well be the reason.

AT&T automatically updates your gateway when you restart it, so try restarting it first.

Before restarting, make a note of the firmware version you are currently running on your gateway.

You can use AT&T’s Smart Home Manager for this on a PC or a phone.

To check your firmware version:

  1. Sign in to Smart Home Manager from a PC or a phone browser.
  2. Select Home Network Hardware.
  3. Choose your Wi-Fi Gateway, then Device Details.
  4. Check the bottom part of the page that opens to see the firmware version.

After noting your current firmware version, you can force a firmware update from the same utility.

To do this:

  1. Open a web browser on your device.
  2. Sign in to Smart Home Manager.
  3. Choose Network.
  4. Scroll down to find Home Network Hardware.
  5. Choose your Wi-Fi Gateway, then select Restart.
  6. Confirm the Restart.

After the gateway restarts, cross-check the version number of the new firmware with the version you had before and confirm if the modem was updated.

Check if the red light on Broadband has gone away after the update.

Check Your Cables and Ports

Why is my ATT fiber router blinking red?

The cables and the ports of the gateway that they go into need to be periodically checked for damage.

Check all the ethernet cables and their ports; in the case of the ethernet cables, make sure the tab that secures the connector in place in the port is not broken off.

Replace the cables if you need to; I’d recommend the Dbillionda Cat 8 ethernet cable.

It has gold plated end connectors that are more durable and are capable of gigabit speeds.

Reset Your Gateway or Router

If a firmware update or changing the cables didn’t fix the issue, you could try factory resetting your gateway.

Remember that performing a factory reset can result in all of your custom settings getting wiped, like a static IP address or a customized Wi-Fi network name.

But you can reconfigure them after the reset.

To reset your AT&T gateway or router:

  1. Find the reset button on the device. It should be either behind it or on its sides.
  2. Press and hold the reset button for about 15 seconds.
  3. The device will now restart, so wait for the lights to come back on.
  4. When the Broadband light goes green, then the reset has been completed.

If the Broadband light stops being red at this point, then you’ve fixed your issue; otherwise, proceed to the next step.

If none of these troubleshooting steps worked out for you, don’t hesitate to contact AT&T support.

They can give you more personalized troubleshooting steps based on their information about your connection and your location on their file.

If need be, they can escalate the issue to have your connection looked at by a technician.

Final Thoughts

After you get the gateway fixed, make sure to not use or disable WPS on your AT&T gateway as soon as possible.

WPS has been proven to be pretty unsafe for use and can use used by malicious agents to steal your information.

Run a speed test as well after you fix the red light issue.

If you find the internet to be slow on your AT&T connection, try repositioning your gateway.
