Car Seats and CrashesIf your car seat has been involved in a major or moderate crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that you replace the child's car seat. If your car was involved in a minor crash (little exterior or interior damage), the car seat does not need to be replaced unless ALL of the following criteria are met:
Parents and caregivers can receive free hands-on help from a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician to learn how to install their safety seat, by visiting a Safety Seat Check Station or a Safety Seat Check Event. The car seat installation experience is an interactive one and takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the car seat and the vehicle. Parents and caregivers will be asked to complete a form prior to checking your safety seat for proper installation, fit for your child, expiration, and recalls. To ensure that you have the best experience, here is how you should prepare:
What is the best place to install a car seat? The safest place for your child's car seat is in the back seat, away from active air bags. If the car seat is placed in the front seat and the air bag inflates, it could hit the back of a rear-facing car seat — right where the child's head is — and cause a serious or fatal injury.
How many weeks should you get your car seat installed? In most cases, we would recommend that you install a car seat no more than 2 weeks before your due date.
Should car seat be installed behind driver or passenger? If you can, put the car seat in the center seat. If not, it is fine behind either the driver or passenger side. The important thing is that it is in the back, away from the airbags. Even in a minor crash, airbags can seriously injure your little one.
Do car seats have to be professionally installed NSW?It's recommended that child car seats are fitted by an authorised restraint fitter or at an authorised restraint fitting station. For more information, see Authorised restraint fitting stations.
