Rui Aramiya, a boy from Japan, arrives in Gotham City, being told by his taxi driver that crime has been at an all-time-high recently. He lets Rui off to cross the bridge by himself. Rui sees a police car, and looks inside, seeing a man he thinks is dead. He panics, before the man wakes up, and cheerfully asks Rui to pay the toll. Another thug dumps all of Rui's belongings on the ground, among them a large katana.

The thugs decide to kill Rui and dump his body in the river, but Rui defends himself by throwing down multiple smoke bombs. He takes his sword back, but is shot by one of the thugs. As he is about to be finished off, Batman comes to his rescue, beating the thugs, and saying how as long as he's alive, he won't let people die.
