The reason why people farm these swords on normal cows is because the area has the correct level to maximize the chance of crafting 4 sockets on a sword using the cube recipe Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst, or if you're desperate for a Spirit you could use the crystal sword dropped from normal cows and add sockets to it from Larzurk's reward on act 5. level 2 It doesn’t increase the chance in the cube. You either have the correct iLvl or you don’t. Cube chance is always 50% for a Crystal Sword that can get 4os (i.e that is high enough iLvl). level 1 Yo I haven’t come across a single crystal sword in normal cows and have run it like 15 times now. Head back to Tristram and pick up the leg every time you reset the map level 1 i need a 4 socket sword to drop on cow level normal. should i use magic find? already used my larzak quest. level 2 magic find is bad for finding normal quality well, I decided to do some research since I was worried about the outcome. basically, the sockets that are available for an item are not dependent on the act they drop in, but the Ilvl of the item, which is based on the Mlvl of the mob that drops it. Long swords are minimum mlvl 20, crystal swords mlvl 11. the sockets are as follows for specific Ilvl categories: Long sword: Crystal sword: the lowest area to have monsters of mlvl 26 or greater is durance of hate lvl 3 (mephs area) in normal. everything past that is higher, so any sword that drops in those areas will net you 4 sockets. the first lvl 41 area is tower cellar level 4 in act 1 nightmare, so any crystal sword that drops off of areas higher then that will yield 6 sockets. So it is possible to get a long sword with only 3 sockets off the quest. I've never had it happen, but perhaps that's due to the long swords I've used in the past. As to purchasing one. i don't have info yet on wht the Ilvl of an item is when purchased. if it's based on your clvl then purchasing a long sword post lvl 25 will net you a 4 socket sword. don't know that one tho, so make sure you find out before doing so. If you see a white sword drop, look up the monster level that dropped it. for crystal sword ilvl 25-40 will get 4 sockets from larzuk.

Since you need an item level over 25 and less than 41 for 4 max sockets, you should be fine anywhere in Act IV and also Act V before the Worldstone Keep.
