Fram Ultra synthetic oil filter Reddit

Problem with BITOG is that everyone has a brand preference and you'll find negative comments on literally all filter and oil brands. Trying to figure out which filter or oil is "best" by reading through that haystack will serve mostly to either confuse you, or reinforce your biases. These oil / filter camps are no different than religions / cults, AMD vs Intel, Apple vs Android, etc.

98%+ of commuter cars will do just fine getting regular-interval changes at a service station and getting whatever filter and oil the shop got the best deal on with their last bulk purchase. The bonus for most commuters is time saved. I change my own because I like doing it, but I just take whatever quality full synthetic oil and quality filter is available easily. I'm perfectly happy with a Fram Ultra and 5 qt jug of Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic if that's what's on sale.

FIRST QUESTION: So I'm new to car repairs and I went and did an oil change myself and I went to change the oil filter using a strap wrench but the location of the oil filter makes it difficult to grip with the wrench. I'm unable to get another tool today.

Is it fine if I drive on my old filter for like a day or two?

SECOND QUESTION: Are. I had went to home depot and saw them and picked them up. I'm now just drained my oil then took a break, looked on reddit and saw people trashing on the FRAM filters.

Are they really that bad?

Wife and I have relatively new cars. She has a 2018 Honda CR-V, me a 2015 Mazda 3. We use full synthetic oil when doing our own oil changes.

From reading various websites, I know some things are really just marketing and some things are worth the higher price. For example, high-mileage oil for older cars is a waste of money but full synthetic oil is worth the money.

FRAM offers 3 different oil filter options with Ultra Synthetic being their premium option. Is it really worth the extra few bucks or is it all marketing?

This isn’t Acura specific, but I thought it might help some of you shade tree mechanics like me. I’ve changed my own oil for the last 20 years and I’ve always just used Fram oil filters because they were cheap. About a year ago my oil filter got stuck on and I shredded it trying to get it off. I swore never again. Spending an extra $3 on a better filter makes a world of difference. Do yourself and your car a favor and stop buying Fram.

Maybe the lesson learned here is to not use the cheapest filter you can find rather then a specific brand. The Fram Ultra filters are high quality and highly regarded. I agree though, don’t recommend the cheap Fram filters, but not for the reason of difficult to remove. Being difficult to remove can happen to any of them depending on how it was installed. As I take it, you haven’t had an issue with it in the past 20 years until now.

level 2

I have had several crush or sheer off over the years. The most recent one was just my final straw. I have also used all of the different Fram styles at this point since the product numbers are basically the same. My issue with them, outside of their general performance, is that the sidewalls are glorified cardboard. I haven’t had similar issues with any other brands. Before you tell me I over tighten them, they are always just put on hand tight. I’ve used several methods to remove them when they are too tight and the fram filters just can’t handle torque without falling apart. Even the best fram filter pales in comparison to any other brand I’ve used.

level 1

Not defending cheap filters but you can overtighten any filter and have to do some crazy shit to get it off. I tend to go OEM and still occasionally get one I have to hammer a screwdriver through to crank that F’er off. (Bet there’s easier methods but that’s how I know lol.)

I used to do the same 🤣🤣

I always use K&N oil filters on my TL. Love that they have a welded nut on the bottom for easy removal too.

I started using these when the OE Honda filters went downhill in quality.

level 1

I use only OEM but funny thing is, Fram makes honda filters.

Also some of the cheap filters are almost cardboard paper on the inside

level 1

there are tons of youtube vids with guys tearing filters in half. most of the sub $3 filters are trash and are almost all paper inside and will barely last 3,000 miles.

I spend for the midrange filters as I change oil every 5,000 and the top shelf filters are overkill.

I thought this was common knowledge like checking your eggs before you buy them

Who still buys Fram oil filters? edit I should say that I have been using Napa religiously for 15 years and no problems at all. I'm pretty sure they use the Bosch medium but that may have changed. I always opt for the extended miles one even though I don't drive my car nearly enough to need it. I don't drive like Grandma. My car seems to like the Napa Gold.

I can recommend MANN filters. I've cut one open recently. They have a full metal construction, even the inner tube isn't plastic.

level 1

That’s because you’re using the wrong Fram. I didn’t know this until like last year but the Fram Ultra Synthetic is currently the best performing filter on the market. Switched from using wix, Bosch, k&n, Mobil 1 etc and haven’t had to look back. Plus it sounds like you’re using the wrong tools

level 1

Do u hand tight it then loosen it quarter turn? I’ve never had that problem with Fram.

level 1

I only use wix and they beat almost everyone out there. Look up a comparison on 10 different brands and they have the best filtering material out of all of them.

Is Fram oil filter any good?

This filter does perfectly fine on my 2021 Honda Accord. I know a lot of people hate on these filters and you can nitpick endlessly but Fram extra guards have always worked. My sister drives for 10,000 miles per oil change and these filters hold up very well even for the construction of the filter.

Does the oil filter brand matter?

The better quality an oil filter is, the better job it will do in filtering contaminants. It's best to check what the manufacturer recommends because you don't want to do anything that might void your warranty is a problem arises.

Are WIX oil filters good?

Are Wix oil filters good filters? The short answer is yes, although it's important to note that there are some caveats. Wix oil filters are made from high-quality materials including polypropylene and stainless steel, which make them effective at filtering out dirt, dust, and other impurities.

Does K&N make good oil filters?

K&N filters are known for their high quality and durability. They are made to withstand extreme conditions and protect your engine from dirt and debris. If you're looking for a reliable filter, K&N is a great option.
