How do you apply beach spray?

Wave hello to beachy hair. Even though you may not be able to spend every day in the sand and sun, your hair can look vacation worthy with just a few salty spritzes. Enter: sea salt spray.

What exactly is a sea salt spray?

A great sea salt spray contains sea salt to create a tousled, texturized look with separation and body. The powerhouse ingredient in this spray is dead sea salt – which is exactly how the saltwater (get it?) from the ocean works on strands. After you apply, the product evaporates and leaves behind salt on the hair. As the salt dries and re-crystallizes, hair is left with added texture and grit that’s perfect for that just-back-from-the-beach texture you’ve been dreaming of!

We’ve formulated two products to make those texturized hair dreams come true: Beach Babe® Texturizing Sea Salt Spray and Beach Babe® Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray. So, what’s the difference between these? The Texturizing Sea Salt Spray has a higher level of salt, which means it provides a higher level of texture and grit than the Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray. In a nutshell, for a subtle hint of texture, pick up a bottle of Beach Babe® Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray. To take things up a notch and get some grit, pick up Beach Babe® Texturizing Sea Salt Spray instead.

How do I use on wet hair?

Both sea salt sprays can be used on wet and dry hair. To use on wet hair, spray strands from mid-lengths to ends. Scrunch into hair and let dry. For some added volume, diffuse with a blow dryer.

How do I use on dry hair?

Don’t have time to wet your hair, but still want to add in some texture? No problem! On dry hair, spray strands from mid-lengths to ends. Scrunch into hair and let air-dry.

Styling Tips for Better Results

Both of our sea salt sprays work on most hair types including straight, wavy and curly hair.

For those with thick hair:

We’d recommend using Beach Babe® Texturizing Sea Salt Spray because of the higher level of grit provided.

For more fine hair:

Beach Babe® Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray should do the trick! It adds subtle texture in all the right places.

For added volume:

Direct your application to the roots and mid-lengths.

For an extra dose of separation:

Concentrate the spray on your ends. Avoid the use of a towel when drying after application of either one of our sea salt sprays... the best way to achieve swoon-worthy waves is by scrunching it in and styling with your fingers, instead.

Worried about the salt in these products? Don’t sweat it. It doesn't penetrate strands and can be easily washed off with your favorite NYM Shampoo and Conditioner! Both of the sprays are also free of any sulfate surfactants, parabens, and phthalates and safe for natural and color-treated hair.

Sea salt spray is probably the most used hair product after dry shampoo. It is a quick and easy way to give your hair that amazing beachy look every girl wants. We’re going to tell you what sea salt spray is, why everyone loves it (why you should too) and most importantly, how to use it! Get ready to use sea salt spray like a BOSS!

What Is Sea Salt Spray?

Sea Salt Spray is a product that helps you style your hair into that wet, messy, “beachy” look everyone loves. It gives your hair beautiful waves due to the salt component in the spray.

Many sea salt products use Epsom salt and not actual sea salt. Isn’t that false advertising?

Don’t fret, though. This is actually good because Epsom salt keeps your hair from drying out.

Most sea salt sprays work for a range of hair types. If your hair is naturally curly and voluminous, you will need to use a minimal amount of sea salt spray. If you have flat or thinning hair, then a salt spray can help you build luscious-looking hair! In fact, sea salt spray will likely become your best friend!

However, like anything, you should test various brands and see which one works best with your hair.

Does Sea Salt Spray Smell Like The Ocean? No, unfortunately. We wondered the same thing.

Why Do People Love Sea Salt Spray?

People love sea salt spray because it works fast and works well. Simple as that.

Sea salt spray works much like dry shampoo. It’s convenient, effective, and gives your hair a fantastic look! What separates the sea salt spray from dry shampoo is that sea salt spray does not clean your hair. Instead, salt sprays are used exclusively as a styling product – and it works better than most products out there! For this reason, many users use both dry shampoo and sea salt spray when styling their hair. (More on that later.)

Unfortunately, most people don’t know how to get the most out of their sea salt spray. Whether you are a current or an up-and-coming sea salt spray user, make sure you follow these steps when using it to achieve that perfect beachy look.

How To Use Sea Salt Spray

Step 1: Dampen Your Hair (Or Shampoo)

We’ve found that for most girls, shampooing before applying sea salt spray is unnecessary. Because you want the result to be that “beachy-wavey” look, we don’t want to strip the hair of essential oils. We want to keep as much volume as possible! So, if you haven’t washed your hair in a while, it may be the perfect time to style with sea salt spray! If so, dampen your hair.

Do NOT soak your hair! You want nice, thorough dampness from roots to ends. So take a shower, watch the first half of an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, and then continue with the process!

If You Decide to Shampoo:

  • If you want to shampoo before styling with sea salt spray, we recommend using a moisturizing shampoo and/or conditioner. Because salt drys the hair, choosing a moisturizing product is best.
  • Do not use a clarifying shampoo directly before using a sea salt spray. Using a clarifying shampoo makes styling with sea salt much more difficult for the high majority of women. This is because the clarifying shampoo strips the hair of volume and bounce. However, you may want to use a clarifying shampoo a day or two after using sea salt spray.
  • If you have naturally straight hair, you should try using a curl-enhancing shampoo. Remember, we want vivacious and voluminous curls for our final look.

Time Needed: 1 Minute (more for shampooing)

2. Comb and Give Your Hair a General Once Through

Comb your damp hair and spend a short amount of time styling. It is not necessary to blow dry your hair at this point.

Combing your hair will separate the follicles and help the hair fall naturally. By combing the hair out, you remove tangles and allow the sea salt to enter the hair more easily.

Time Needed: 1 Minute (less if you are a badass)

3. Apply Sea Salt Spray to Hair

Now it’s time for the fun! Grab your sea salt spray (if you don’t have any, you can get great deals by clicking here), and let’s get started!

First, make sure you shake your sea salt spray VERY well. This is crucial. You aren’t going to overdo it with the shaking! This ensures the product is properly mixed and ready for application! Shake, baby, shake!

Second, spray each section of your hair. In the video above, you will notice that the spray is only being applied to the mid and top sections of the hair. This is fine, but feel free to apply lower if you like! Despite claims against it, you can apply sea salt spray to the roots of your hair. In fact, if you are looking for more volume, then by all means – add sea salt spray to the roots!

If you don’t want to use the spray on your roots, use a dry shampoo. This will give you the volume you are looking for.

Third, once the sea salt is applied – twist, crunch, and scrunch your hair. This is super fun and the most important part of the process. This is going to activate the sea salt spray and give you a fresh-off-the-beach look.

You can also follow this routine the night before and put your hair into scrunchies. Leave your hair in the scrunchies overnight, and the next morning you will be ready to go! You can also braid your hair if scrunchies are unavailable – or if you aren’t a 12-year-old girl from the 90s.

Let’s Recap:

– Spray and twist

– Spray and crunch

– Spray and scrunch

Time Needed: 2 Minutes

4. Dry Your Hair

With your sexy beach look almost complete, it is now time to dry your hair. You have two options:

Option One: You can blow dry your hair on a cool setting. Obviously, the better the hairdryer, the better your hair will look afterward. You don’t want to use too much force when blowing drying your hair – so hold that hair dryer at a distance. We want the sea salt to work its magic, and too much forceful air will keep it from doing that.

Option Two: Let it air dry! Remember, your hair wasn’t soaked when we started. It was just damp. So by this point, it shouldn’t need much more time to completely dry. For most users, air drying is sufficient.

Plus, guys love a girl with wet hair. It’s true. These are facts.

But please don’t…

…rub your hair with a towel! You can pat it dry or even scrunch it a tad, but don’t rub your hair with a towel! We know that YOU know this, but we just wanted to let the other ladies know.

Don’t ruin your hair by rubbing your hair with a towel over and over.

Time Needed: 0 – 30 Seconds

5. Apply Light Hairspray (Optional)

Applying hairspray will keep you from having to “re-scrunch” your hair throughout the day. Now, if you are thinking, “isn’t the sea salt spray supposed to keep my hair looking fab regardless if I used hairspray?” You’re right. It should.

But we are realists, and the truth of the matter is that depending on the amount of humidity in the air, your hair type, and what brand of sea salt spray you used, your hair could lose some of its “beach look.” So, to keep that from happening, we suggest a little bit of hairspray!

Time Needed: 0-30 Seconds
