How long does oatmeal with milk last in the fridge

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but I couldn't figure out where to ask and thought some people here might have an answer. Please let me know if there's somewhere I should post.

I eat oatmeal made with milk most mornings. It would be awesome if I could just make enough on Sunday for the week, but I'm worried it might not stay good that long because of the milk. Has anyone else done this? Would it stay good for 4-5 days? Thanks!

Something to look into might be almond milk. It is a little more expensive than normal milk, but I save money on it because it doesn't spoil nearly as fast as normal milk.

Question - I always see a label on almond milk that says "Use 7-10 days after opening." Since I live alone and only use milk on my cereal, I don't go through even a half-gallon in 10 days. Is it okay to use almond milk after 10 days as long as it is before the expiration date?

level 2

That's a good idea. Is it healthier than normal milk too?

Don't drink Blue Diamond or any other brand that has carrageenan. HEB brand (Texas and surrounding) is amazing and cancer-free. :D

As long as your milk will last really. So always use your freshest milk. We prepare no more than 5 days at a time currently.

level 2

Thanks. I wasn't sure if heating up the milk changed anything.

This is also a function of how cold the fridge is. A warm fridge and it will spoil quickly, an arctic (almost freezing) fridge and it will keep much longer.

level 2

Interesting. I'll have to try that.

This is my breakfast go-to! It's super easy to throw together at night and surprisingly filling.

We do "overnight oatmeal" in my household, whereby we'll take oatmeal, put it in a mason jar, and smother it in almond milk, add cardamon, and leave it over night. The texture in the morning is great and the milk keeps as well. All prep is at night. I've had success with up to 2 days with this.

How well does the cardamom flavour come through with this? It sounds delicious and I reckon it would go well with the chocolate protein powder I use in my porridge.

Usually about a week providing you're microwaving it before consumption. It can be longer. If you can freeze it in small batches and add 2 minutes to micro time

level 2

Freezing it is a good idea. I might need to buy more tupperware though.

I am confused. When I make oatmeal it takes about a minute in the microwave and I am not talking about instant oatmeal. Am I using some plebeian oatmeal? Am I losing quality by using the microwave?

It just seems to me that I wouldn't save like any time doing it on a weekend if I was going to warm it up again anyway.

I prefer making it on the stove. I doubt there's much qualify difference, just my preference. I also try to minimize the amount of stuff I need to do in the morning as much as possible. I hate mornings and the later I can wake up the better. Plus I normally don't eat it until I get to work, so I can jut heat it up there.

Overnight oats just may be the superstar of the make-ahead breakfast world. Not only do they require no cooking whatsoever, but they are also adaptable, wholesome, and satisfying. Start stirring up a handful of Mason jars of them at the start of each week and you’re guaranteed to make a habit of it. How many jars can you actually make on Sunday night, though? If you make enough to get you through all five days of the work week, will they actually stay good until Friday?

How Long Overnight Oats Last

Overnight oats can be stored in an airtight container for up to five days in the refrigerator. The caveat is that they’ll continue to soften the longer they sit — which might be a bonus if you like your oatmeal on the super-creamy side. They’re definitely best on day one and two, when they are soft but still have retained some of that toothsome chew, but five days is the max. Over time, you’ll find that the liquid will separate from the oats while the container sits in the fridge — just give it a quick stir to reincorporate everything before enjoying.

One strategy for still having this breakfast waiting for you in the fridge is to make them in batches of two to three jars. Over the course of the week, just tuck another jar into the fridge to replace the one you had for breakfast. See! Easy.

One more note: If you’re planning to store your overnight oats for the full four days, it’s wise to leave out things like nuts, coconut flakes, granola, and fresh fruit, as they’ll also soften while sitting in the fridge. Stir them into your serving just before digging in for the best results.
