How to make a private server in tf2

How would I go about creating a private server for me and my friends to dick around in? I want something like soundsmiths Hightower adventures series. And whenever I try to create a server and invite a friend, it always, without fail, says “no connection” or some other garbage. Please help.

So you click find game and then you click create server. After you do that there is are two tabs, one to choose the map and one to set a password, IP etc. Then you choose the right map and you click start game.

level 2

doesnt that just create a local server/lan server?

level 1

sv_lan 0 should make a local server joinable

level 2

I’m pretty sure that you have to also have a “20715” port opener or have the port already opened. I don’t know what that means but I assume that it lets people access your router.

level 2

Sv_lan only works if the other player is on the same internet. He’s asking how to host his own server, like in CoD.

How to make a private server in tf2

How do I host a private server to play with friends.

The question is in the title. I need to know how to host a server on a map that I downloaded or whatever to play with my friends. Like if we wanted to play on Upward on tf2, then it would just be us or whoever we invite to the game. Is there any commands into the console that I have to type or anything?

The alternative is to host it yourself on a computer you own: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Dedicated_Server

There might be good guides for this in the tf2 hub somewhere.

I was wondering to host i on a computer, I tried looking it up but when I invited my friends, they couldn't join. I thought there was some commands or whatever to let me host a server to let them join. I tried the "+" button where the add a server button is but that doesn't work either.

I don't wanna have to do anything to my PC or buy anything.

I remember in another game being able to make a private match without needing to worry about the above or randoms joining. is it possible in TF2?

Yep.

To do it, click the "+" button next to "Choose Server" and have the server require a password.
Now, just give the people you want in the match the password and the name of the server and you're all set.

not surprised since it's you posting but tf2 listen servers aren't that simple.

they're not even online by default since it's set to sv_lan 1.

also listen servers suck in general

After about an hour and a half of messing around in the command console and trying to follow guides to set up a simple two-player server for me to show a friend the basics of the game, I gave up.

Short answer, kind of - you can't set up a 'private match' without quite a bit of effort and knowledge.

I find it easiest to do by using a virtual LAN program like Hamachi or Evolve. Set up the server, have everyone in the group, then type "Connect *the VPN IP*" and it should work.

If you just want to reserve a server and make it invite only for a bit, use this website. You can reserve them for up to 3 hours (it might just be 2) and password lock them. If you want to host a server yourself, you will have to alter things on your computer (but I don't know enough about that to describe it to you).

How do I get a private TF2 server IP?

When playing on the server, go into your console (using the ~ button, next to "1" on your keyboard, after enabling the console in your options -> advanced). In the console, type "status". This will give you some information about the server and players on it. The server IP is in the line udp/ip.
