Is there a manga about cats?

Whether they’re cuddling with us, ignoring us, or plotting our demise, cats are an important part of our lives. It’s no wonder they show up in so many anime! But if you’re looking for titles made especially for cat lovers, we can help you narrow it down a bit. Here are a few anime and manga for owners and appreciators of our feline friends.

The Cat Returns

Is there a manga about cats?

This Studio Ghibli film directed by Hiroyuki Morita will look somewhat familiar to fans of Ghibli’s earlier film Whisper of the Heart. Remember the little cat statuette? He’s back, and he’s a major character in this fantasy adventure. Our protagonist, Haru, inadvertently accepts a proposal of marriage from the Prince of Cats, and has been whisked away to his kingdom and is slowly turning into a cat. Helping her break the engagement and get home are, among others, the aforementioned Baron. It’s an adorable fantasy story for cat lovers, and the dub is full of notable names like Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, and Tim Curry.

Chi’s Sweet Home

Is there a manga about cats?

Have you ever changed you entire life to accommodate your beloved pets? Then you’ll relate to Chi’s Sweet Home, followed by Chi’s New Address. Chi is a ridiculously adorable stray kitten who wanders away from her family, but is found by a young boy named Youhei Yamada. The Yamadas are enamored of Chi and decide to keep her. The only problem? Their current complex doesn’t allow pets. So they move house in order to keep her. A sweet home, indeed. Plus, Chi is potentially the cutest kitten ever to grace the TV screen or manga page. Look at those little fangs.

Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon and Mu

Is there a manga about cats?

Not every aspect of cat “ownership” is adorable. Some of it is downright terrifying. Just ask Junji Ito, the man who brought us Tomie and Uzumaki. This autobiographical slice-of-life manga recounts the attempts of Ito, then a self-avowed “dog person,” to learn to live with his then-fiancée’s cat Yon and new adoptee Mu. The manga blends perfect artistic renderings of the weirdness of cats with Ito’s familiar horror stylings — often to dunk on himself. A perfect read for cat lovers who both adore their fluffy housemate and know just how strange they can be.

This is a fantastic collection featuring humorous stories all centering around an orange cat named Michael and his interactions with different humans and animals. The humor is absurd and zany, and lampoons the behavior of cats and humans alike! I’m really happy to see that these Fatcat Collections are being released. All ages can enjoy this one, as the humor works for adult and child audiences.

Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu

By Junji Ito,

Is there a manga about cats?

Why this book?

Famed horror manga author Junji Ito brings us this delightful collection of autobiographical stories about interactions with his family cats. Those familiar with his chilling and grotesque horror stories will be amused at the unnerving style in which he draws himself, his wife, and cats. Ultimately, it ends up being sweet and heartwarming, even if the art is not exactly cute. This is a favorite of mine!

Horror comics author Junji Ito has recently purchased a new house and has decided to invite his girlfriend to move in with him. However, when she moves in, she comes with two cats, Yon, a strange-looking white cat with a ghastly fur pattern on its back that resembles a skull, and Mu, Yon's cute counterpart and playmate. This manga is a diary of the author's life as he tries and often fails to connect with his two feline friends. The manga is drawn in Junji Ito's horror comic style featuring intricate and finely drawn images.

I Am a Cat (Bilingual)

By Soseki Natsume,

Is there a manga about cats?

Is there a manga about cats?
Recommended by Gwen Cooper

From Gwen's list on with cats as characters.

The original, and still unsurpassed! First published in Japan in 1906, this gleeful skewering of the foibles of Japan’s upper-middle-class during the Meiji era—told in first-person narration from the perspective of an eminently observant and sardonic housecat—manages to feel fresh and modern more than 100 years later and reads like something that could have been published last week. When I first set about writing my own novel from a cat’s perspective, Love Saves the Day, this was the first book I turned to for inspiration. It was so good, it almost left me too intimidated to write mine. Almost.

I Am a Cat (Bilingual)

By Soseki Natsume,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked I Am a Cat (Bilingual) as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

"A nonchalant string of anecdotes and wisecracks, told by a fellow who doesn't have a name, and has never caught a mouse, and isn't much good for anything except watching human beings in action..." -The New Yorker

Written from 1904 through 1906, Soseki Natsume's comic masterpiece, I Am a Cat, satirizes the foolishness of upper-middle-class Japanese society during the Meiji era. With acerbic wit and sardonic perspective, it follows the whimsical adventures of a world-weary stray kitten who comments on the follies and foibles of the people around him.

A classic of Japanese literature, I Am a Cat is one… show more.

The Cat Who Went to Heaven

By Elizabeth Coatsworth, Raoul Vitale (illustrator),

Is there a manga about cats?

Is there a manga about cats?
Recommended by Lesléa Newman

From Lesléa's list on the loving bond between people and cats.

I have read this book at least a dozen times. First published in 1930, it has become a classic, winning the Newbery Medal (the Oscar of children’s books!) and other awards. The story, which takes place in Japan, is about a poor, humble artist, who is working on an important painting. Though he has very little money and cannot afford another mouth to feed, his housekeeper brings a little white cat home from the market. At first, the artist is disgruntled, but nevertheless, the cat becomes known as Good Fortune, and indeed, through an act of selflessness, the cat does bring good fortune to the artist. The writing style is gorgeous, and the book is an absolute pleasure to read. Very soothing and meditative. No wonder it’s become a classic!

What is this book about?

A Newberry Medal Winner

This timeless fable has been a classic since its first publication in 1930, and this beautifully reillustrated edition brings the magic and wonder of the tale to a new generation of readers.

In ancient Japan, a struggling artist is angered when his housekeeper brings home a tiny white cat he can barely afford to feed. But when the village’s head priest commissions a painting of the Buddha for a healthy sum, the artist softens toward the animal he believes has brought him luck.

According to legend, the proud and haughty cat was denied the Buddha’s blessing… show more.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles

By Hiro Arikawa, Philip Gabriel (translator),

Is there a manga about cats?

Is there a manga about cats?
Recommended by Iulia Dobre-Trifan

From Iulia's list on relationships that define us across time.

Who would expect a stray cat to be such a fine philosopher and insightful observer of human nature? How deeply affectionate the relationship between a man and his cat could be? This book provides amazing perspectives. Not only is the feline companion of the main character a witty, funny, loving being, but he’s also a witness to what happens in his caretaker’s life, mirroring friendship, love, loss, and standing by his human’s side through unexpected trials. I like how the author personifies the cat and how he uses the travels of the surprising pair (cat-man) to metaphorically picture the main stages of human growth.
