  • The Ear of Luigi.Explanation A mishearing of Satoru Iwata when announcing The Year of Luigi.
  • Daisy is just a Peach clone.Explanation Due to being a Suspiciously Similar Substitute to Princess Peach/Toadstool in Super Mario Land and a Palette Swap in the N64 era, this phrase got common in the fandom post-GCN era because of her similar animations to Peach and her gown being an orange version of Peach's, despite her redesign in Mario Party 4. Made Hilarious in Hindsight when Daisy was announced as an Echo Fighter of Peach in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which made her a literal "clone" of Peach.
  • FINALLY GETS THE SUMMER OFF GOES TO BEACH AND GETS STOMPED BY MARIOExplanation A Nintendo-created one, actually, from their American Facebook page. It lampshades the Butt-Monkey status of The Goomba.

demonstrating how the console's parental control system works. While the entire video became something of a meme, one moment in particular where Bowser covers his son's eyes stands out. It's often paired with another scene of Bowser Jr. looking at the TV screen with various inappropriate things (or any kind of media) spliced in.
  • Luigi board.Explanation Mishearing of ouija board, which originated on Yahoo! Answers.
  • Capitan Todd. Explanation After an update to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker came out, a user on NeoGAF made a thread

asking if anyone else was having problems running the game, but misspelled the game's name as "Capitan Todd". After , it eventually became a well-known joke on the forum.
  • BING BING WAHOO Explanation Originally came from a 4chan copypasta mocking the somewhat abrasive sound effects of the more modern Mario titles as well as Nintendo Switch fans who play the system in public. It was eventually adopted by the Mario fandom themselves, who usually use the phrase as a way of jokingly poking fun at Mario.
  • #WiggerWednesday. Explanation  This tweet

Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
. The idea of a Ridiculously Cute Critter like Yoshi committing tax fraud is seen as humorously absurd.
    • We have proof! Explanation On January 15th, 2019, the Supper Mario Broth Twitter brought the meme back into the spotlight when they posted a tweet

showing that in Fortune Street, Yoshi is the only character (in a roster of twenty-six) that asks to be exempt from paying taxes when one of the players builds a tax office.
    • Looks like the government got him back. Explanation On February 20th, 2019, a story
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
came out, pointing out that the EPA had accidentally used music from Yoshi's Island DS for a Flash game about recycling, which many took as the government giving Yoshi his comeuppance for his crimes.
  • Yobby.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A Tumblr user had a dream where he met Yoshi's dad, Yobby, who looked like a blue Yoshi with a long neck. Yobby quickly became a popular fan character with lots of art and even his own theme music.
  • Super Crown Explanation On September 13th, 2018, it was revealed that a deluxe port of New Super Mario Bros. U was coming to the Nintendo Switch. One of the new additions is a playable Toadette who can obtain a new power-up called a "Super Crown", which can transform her into a Peach-like character with her floating mechanic known as "Peachette". Simply put, this one power-up in a simple port job has exploded into meme stardom like nothing else in the Mario fandom... hence the absurd number of sub-memes here.
    • "But seriously, who is Peachette?" Explanation Peachette appears to be a fusion of Peach and Toadette and has baffled the Mario fandom. With how loose the Mario series's canon is, people have jokingly come up with bizarre rumors about Peachette to the point where news websites even covered their confusion over the character.
    • Bowsette Explanation A combination of the above and "Mario and Bowser are gay", Bowsette was originally spawned out of a fancomic
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
in which, after Peach rejects both Mario and Bowser at the end of Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser brandishes a Super Crown and starts dating Mario as a female humanoid with aspects of Peach (dress, hair, earrings, breasts) and Bowser (spiked bands, fangs, shell, horns). Fan Art and edits of the original comic quickly followed. This quickly spread into the Japanese Mario fandom and Twitter, with the name "Koopa-hime" (クッパ姫, translated Princess Koopa, a play on Bowser's Japanese name King Koopa.), with several well-known mangaka releasing their own versions. This also sees crossover with the Double Cherry power-up from Super Mario 3D World being used for unintended purposes.
      • She's canon, right? Explanation Some sites have provided prank images of Nintendo announcing Bowsette as an actual character, fooling a large number of people. Not helping matters is concept art from the Super Mario Odyssey artbook, which revealed that at one point Bowser had his own version of Cappy that he would use on Peach, with the result looking surprisingly similar to the red-haired, tan-skinned version of Bowsette.
      • Deepest lore. Explanation Some fans have proposed the idea that Bowser Jr. thought Princess Peach was his mother because of Bowsette's resemblance to her, or at least are amused by the idea that this would be true. Musings of Mario being the father are not far behind, especially as an explanation for Jr's Shadow Mario disguise. Understandably, the term "deepest lore" is making fun of the fact that such a key backstory question would have such a disturbing answer.
      • Bowser Jr's reaction Explanation Re-imagining Bowser as Bowsette has a range of implications for Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings. Either they're traumatized by the whole event, happy that they finally have a mom, or they get involved and are also transformed into cute girls by the Super Crown. What this means for Wendy O. Koopa depends on the artist as well.
    • Peachyboo/Boo(s)ette Explanation Another offshoot of the "Super Crown" meme, with King Boo wearing it and turning into a Cute Ghost Girl version of Peach. At least two versions exist, one wearing a white wedding dress and the other with a black Victorian outfit. While Bowsette is largely associated with Mario, Boo(s)ette has more of an association with Luigi, since pairing nemesis (nemeses?) with each other provides for interesting interactions.
      • And Chompette makes three! Explanation While many characters from the Mario series have been given the Super Crown, the three most common subjects are Bowsette, Peachyboo, and some variant of Chain Chomp for whatever reason. Generally, whenever Bowsette has an army of super-crowned characters, Chompette will be prominently featured; she's even been used to make a Freudian Trio Girl Posse with Bowsette and Peachyboo.
    • Infinite Waifus! Explanation The Super Crown has been applied to numerous other Mario characters, including things such as Yoshi, Chain Chomps, Magikoopas, Piranha Plants, Goombas, Bloopers, Thwomps, and even the haunted piano and giant eel from Super Mario 64. Certain artists have noticed the trend and warned that Nintendo has created a tool to create 'infinite Waifus'. The meme has become oddly meta and recursive, with attempts to destroy the crown in lava resulting in a Lava Peach, Peach herself considering putting the crown on or taking off her own crown to reveal a smaller Toad-like form, the crown being put on non-Mario characters like King K. Rool or Isabelle, the crown being put on certain characters like Wario or Waluigi... and having absolutely no change (or turning them into a Butterface), the original Peachette form becoming jealous of all the attention that Bowsette and other "-ette" beings are getting, and the crown being put on top of another crown. Older fans have compared this to the Midnight Bliss phenomenon, where a move or powerup was used to deliberately invoke Rule 63 on everyone just to make them into cute girls.
      • Eevette Explanation A vaguely Super Crown-ized version of Eevee
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
from Pokémon made by one of the graphic designers at Game Freak. The work barely features any Mario-related elements (Eevee is wearing a small crown, but that's it) and the characters look more like regular teen-to-20-something humans with Eevee and Pikachu heads. Considering Game Freak's most successful IP (Pokémon) is jointly owned by Game Freak, Nintendo and Creatures Inc., this was very likely to avoid turning heads they didn't want to turn.
      • That's not how names work! Explanation Many people have pointed out that Super Crown-induced genderbends being named "[name]ette" doesn't make sense, as Peachette is only named as such due to being a combination of Peach and Toadette. Occasionally, this is responded with "You're part of the problem!", courtesy of ProZD's video on Bowsette.
      • It's too powerful! Explanation All attempts to stop the Super Crown meme from spreading have failed, both in universe and out. Portrayals of the characters attempting to destroy the crown inevitably backfire, the fact that famous artists have contributed to the meme have only made it grow stronger, and the Bowsette character has even made news discussions.
    • BlooPearl/Pearl is a Blooper Explanation The Splatoon 2 character Pearl is a squid-girl who wears a crown and a white dress. With the memetic status of the Super Crown, images have cropped up of her actually being a Blooper who put the crown on and/or encountering a Blooper wearing the crown.
    • Sonic is unamused. Explanation It's not uncommon to show the Mario cast reacting in horror at the sheer amount of possible rule 34 unleashed by the Super Crown's introduction, and Sonic being completely unfazed due to the nature of the Sonic fandom.
    • 10 coins Explanation The reality is that whenever anyone but Toadette picks up the Super Crown, all they get is an additional 10 coins. Some fanart pokes fun at this.
      • Sorry Luigi! Explanation The official website explaining the 10 coins rule takes the time to apologize to Luigi, of all characters. As Luigi has previously been depicted, both in comics and in game (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga to be exact), as wearing Princess Peach's dress for reasons (the in-game one is a fall-back that had to be resorted to when Fawful saw through their first plan), there are a lot of counter-proposals suggesting he's already a pretty princess and doesn't need the crown.
  • Toad as Trump's dick Explanation In a tell-all book by porn star Stormy Daniels, she compared
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Trump's penis to the "mushroom character from Mario Kart." The sheer absurdity and lewd factor of this statement inevitably resulted in the Internet going wild with it.
  • Mario Goes To The Fridge To Get A Glass Of Milk. Explanation Originating from a video made by Pikasprey
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, this meme is pretty similar to Kirby Does His Taxes, poking fun at the idea that adding a famous character like Mario to a mundane task like getting a glass of milk automatically makes it fun and exciting. SMG4 also did a video under this title. (The similarity to a Super Mario 64-inspired advertisement from the "Got Milk?" campaign
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
    probably helped.)
  • What are the Mario Bros views on X?
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation An image macro that compares Mario and Luigi's views on a certain topic. While Mario's opinion is usually reasonable, well thought-out, and moderately long, Luigi gives a radical, offensive, and nonsensical response in the form of a short, snappy rhyme.
  • Coinless runs Explanation A Self-Imposed Challenge popularized by YouTuber MayroSMM
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, involving going through a Mario game while trying not to collect any coins at all. Many other YouTubers have tried their hand at beating Mario games without collecting coins afterwards.
  • Bowser takes over Nintendo. Explanation On February 21st, 2019, Reggie Fils-Aime announced he was retiring as President of Nintendo of America. However, many people were skeptical of the announcement upon seeing the name of his successor: Doug BOWSER. Cue a Hurricane of Puns, fanart, and speculation on what Bowser would do if he had power at Nintendo. Became an Ascended Meme when he actually "met" Bowser at E3 2019

    • We never getting a new Mario game ever again
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation These jokes have been openly embraced by Bowser even before his Presidency. Once he was announced, this
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
tweet and its accompanying picture started circulating again, even becoming the thumbnail of Doug's Know Your Meme entry. (The picture in question is of Doug holding a card reading "Thank you for the warm welcome" while two plushes of Mario and Luigi are on a shelf behind him, tied together with the cord of a GameCube controller.)
  • We are going to beat you to death. Explanation A box

◊ of Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats with a tie-in promotion for Super Mario 64 became notorious for depicting the penguins featured in the game, who not only have outdated character models, but look unintentionally intimidating.
  • Wario dies in X while doing X. Explanation For whatever reason, many fans in 2019 started uploading videos that had audio mixed with various Wario soundbites which portrayed Wario dying under comically bizarre circumstances. Examples include Wario dying in a car crash
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
while listening to Ed Sheeran, dying in the bombing of Hiroshima while eating spicy curry

, dying in a helicopter crash

    • OH MY GOD!!! WAAAAAAHHHH-Explanation The first part of the quote comes from the NTSC-J version of Mario Party for Nintendo 64, while the second is his scream from Mario Kart 64. Both of these lines are regularly combined in these videos.
  • Nintendo's sex icon, Mario.Explanation Someone on Twitter mentioned that while characters like Kiryu and the Resident Evil 2 (Remake) version of Leon give off a "what is sex" vibe, Mario... doesn't. Since then, people have jokingly referred to Mario as a sex icon despite (or because of) the lack of sexualization he has in the slightest in canon.
  • Mario screaming Explanation This video
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
of Mario screaming continuously, made by putting his "burned" sound bite from Super Mario Sunshine on a custom loop, has been replicated many times with other characters.
    • MmmAAAAAAA/MA-MAAAAAA Explanation Bits of audio from the aforementioned video, used to represent an exasperated scream or a Big "NO!" in videos. Also in another note, this particular segment
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
of said video is used for audio of someone performing a Curb-Stomp Battle or going into an Unstoppable Rage.
  • Super Mario on the PS4
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation This comes from an intentionally poorly-made video (with a crappy boxart accompanying it) of Mario saying "Hello! It's-a me, Super Mario on the PS4!" and then shouting very loudly. This naturally led to other characters being put on other consoles with similar videos accompanying them

  • Stock sad Mario images Explanation As this tweet points out
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, practically every time a news site makes an article about bad news that concerns Nintendo, they nearly always use one of the same three or four images. Thus, the prevalence of these images has led to them being mocked for their staggering overuse.
  • i've won… but at what cost?Explanation An image of
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
a semi-transparent Wario looking down dejectedly, with a cloudy sky as a background and the text as an overlay. Often used for a reaction to a Pyrrhic Victory or a Was It Really Worth It? situation.
  • Drink all the shampoo in the house Explanation Within online communities, for some reason (likely due to its Non Sequitur humor) it's a common trend to associate Wario with drinking
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊ all of the shampoo in your house.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
  • [kicks in door] give me your liver Explanation  A reaction image of Mario kicking open someone's door and the words "give me your liver" hastily edited into the second panel. Used to represent what one thinks is an Ass Pull moment from a given character or jokingly saying that they're going to come to the poster's house and tear out their liver due to their actions, similar to the "you have lost penis privilege" meme. Video variations (usually ending with Mario reaching towards or jumping at the screen) are also very popular and often make the audio very loud so it can seem like Mario is shouting.
  • Mario will die on March 31st, 2021/Mario Gets Publicly Executed Explanation After being rumored for many months, much to the excitement of fans, the existence of Super Mario 3D All-Stars (a Compilation Rerelease for the Switch of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy for the Super Mario series' 35th anniversary) was finally revealed in September 2020, but with a major catch; the game would be taken off store shelves and the Nintendo eShop after March 31st 2021, with no as-of-yet known recourse for players who would had not yet purchased the game. This bizarre decision led to a lot of jokes about Nintendo killing off their mascot and going to extreme lengths to cover up the game's existence once the deadline had passed, as well as future Milestone Celebrations involving Nintendo trying to cover up the existence of Mario games in general. This meme gained more traction once it was announced that the original Super Mario Maker on Wii U would also have the ability to upload levels removed on that date
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
. It got to the point where Super Mario Wiki completely unpersoned Mario as its April Fools joke for 2021. SiIvaGunner followed suit, privating all of their existing Mario rips and uploading new rips with Mario's name removed.
    • Sephiroth enforcing the date Explanation On December 10th of 2020, Final Fantasy's Sephiroth was announced for Smash Ultimate, and part of his trailer included him seemingly impaling Mario... before it's revealed that he only caught the plumber's overalls loop in his blade. The shot of Mario seemingly being murdered in cold blood led many to joke that this was how the Super Mario franchise was going to conclude at the end of March 31st, 2021.
    • Don't worry, they'll revive him for golf Explanation Due to the release of Mario Golf: Super Rush being set on June 25th, 2021, three months after the distribution of Super Mario 3D All-Stars ended, many people have joked that Mario will be revived so he can play golf.
    • Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn't exist. Explanation Despite containing almost every other 3D Mario game for home consoles (barring Super Mario 3D World, which would instead receive a separate Updated Re-release), Super Mario 3D All-Stars does not have Super Mario Galaxy 2. Not only that, but the Nintendo Direct the game was announced in, which was in all accounts a celebration of the series over its entire 35 years, also doesn't contain any reference to the game, despite it being one of the highest-rated games in the series as well as all time. This also led to jokes about Nintendo wanting to cover up the existence of Super Mario Galaxy 2.
    • Pac-Man is Nintendo's new mascot / Pac-Man killed Mario Explanation Just 6 days after Super Mario Bros. 35 was removed, Nintendo announced PAC-MAN 99, a battle royale version of Pac-Man, which had no end date unlike Super Mario Bros. 35. This led to jokes that Nintendo was replacing Mario with Pac-Man as their new mascot, or that he was the one who executed Mario.
    • "Mario's not dead, Luigi is".Explanation A similar response to the above, but with a screenshot of Luigi's Heroic Sacrifice from Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom, largely to push the source meme as a Discredited Meme.
  • This, but with Joycon drift Explanation After the announcement of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, people started making posts that simply said this phrase alongside a picture of any of the various infamous levels from the original three games, joking about the Fake Difficulty that would be added to the already-hard levels by such a hinderance.
  • Nintendo is making a Princess Peach porn game Explanation On September 21st of 2020
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, it came out that Peach's Untold Tale, a porn game starring Peach which was around since 2012 and was still receiving updates, had suddenly been taken down by Nintendo. Considering several of Nintendo's takedowns have preceded announcements relevant to those takedowns (such as Another Metroid 2 Remake being taken down 10 months before Metroid: Samus Returns was announced, or the Super Mario Bros. 1 battle royale getting shut down half a year before Super Mario Bros. 35), this naturally led to people claiming that Nintendo DMCA'd the fan porn game because they planned on making an official one.
  • Foreman Spike Explanation  A character from the pre-Super Mario Bros. game Wrecking Crew, in which he served as both the titular plumbers' boss and as the antagonist for the game, and has since had cameos in some later ones. In August 2021, comedian Sebastian Mansicalco revealed on the Bertcast podcast that he would be voicing the character in Illumination Entertainment's upcoming animated Mario movie (later confirmed during the cast reveal, where the icon representing his character was Spike's head), which led to a surge of popularity for the rather obscure character because prior to the Nintendo Direct reveal (see "The Super Mario Bros Movie" folder below) Illumination had been very secretive about the movie, so people were happy to at least learn something about it.
  • T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas Explanation The Nintendo Character Guide published by Nintendo of America in 1993 claims that Yoshi's full name is this. While the guide is not canon (it was written by someone unaffiliated with Nintendo of Japan and was not published over there), the name quickly became a popular subject of parody thanks to how ridiculous it sounded, even by the Mario series' famously eclectic standards.
  • Bowser may be evil, but he's not Activision-Blizzard evil. Explanation In response to the Activision-Blizzard harassment case, Doug Bowser (President of Nintendo of America) wrote a note to employees at Nintendo of America
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
and called the case "disturbing and distressing". Due to the "Bowser runs Nintendo" meme above, many made jokes that even though Bowser (the fictional villain) kidnaps princesses, he would never do something that evil.

  • Rapper / Gangster Mario Explanation A clip of Mario beatboxing from a Japanese commercial

for Super Mario Ball (Mario Pinball Land in America). The clip initially gained popularity in the mid-late 2000s, with videos popping up where Mario's rapping was set to other songs, and a gif of the clip was quite popular. It made a comeback in 2019, this time in the form of an image macro where Mario introduces himself and starts rapping, usually about something offensive played for humor.
  • Gilbert / Uncanny Mario Explanation A black and white image of Mario edited to be unnerving. He’s commonly used as a reaction image along with happy Mario to show how something goes from good to bad.

  • Creepy Mario
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Exlanation Back in 2010, an image of Shigeru Miyamoto cutting a cake for Mario's 25th anniversary was posted online. People noted that a man in a Mario costume in the background seemed unintentionally creepy and quickly began photoshopping him into various images to make him even creepier, usually involving him watching someone else or popping up in unexpected locations.

    Waluigi

  • Waluigi is everywhere.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Partly due to Brawl in the Family and due to the character's own behavior, Waluigi's erratic and chaotic behavior has led him a certain fame of being capable of popping up anywhere, at any time.
    • WALUIGI TIME!!! Explanation Waluigi's catchphrase. It originated from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and later Brawl in the Family ascended it to memetic status.
  • Waluigi's Taco Stand. Explanation A fake game poking fun at the fact that Waluigi has yet to gain a noteworthy breakout role in a Nintendo game. No, his world domination plot from Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix does not count (he was just a Starter Villain in that game, with Wario and later Bowser ousting him from the Big Bad role).
    • Waluigi's Bridal Boutique Explanation Yet another job Waluigi might have. Inspired by The Runaway Guys' playthrough of Fortune Street, wherein Waluigi (ProtonJon) buys a bridal boutique for absurd amounts of money.
      • WALUIGI'S GONNA HELP YOU GET MARRIED!
    • WALUIGI'S ANY ETHNICITY HE WANTS TO BE! Explanation ProtonJon from The Runaway Guys loves doing a Waluigi voice whenever he's on screen, which has a tendency to switch between Mexican and Italian.
  • Waluigi is JoJo Explanation His animations in Mario Golf for 3DS looks like something taken out of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. His design doesn't help either.
  • The Crotch Chop
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation In Super Mario Strikers and Mario Strikers Charged, Waluigi has an animation he can do upon scoring a goal where he swings his hands on the sides of his crotch, as if to say "suck it!" Despite only appearing in those two games, it's an iconic pose that's well-associated with him due to it being something you'd never expect to see out of a Mario game.

  • Super Mario Bros.:
    • "THANK YOU, MARIO! BUT OUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE!" Explanation The standard message for completing a stage in the early Mario games. Used for any situation in which someone must continue their search. It receives much mockery for yanking the player's chain; as well as sympathy for Mario's situation, that he keeps coming close to his goal only to have it pushed further away. The Princess is always in another castle. (Except in World 8-4.)
    • "SORRY NOTHING" Explanation The message displayed in the Korean Mockbuster Super Boy in the same situation as the above.
    • [?] Explanation Ever since the original Super Mario Bros., most blocks that contain powerups, coins, etc., have had a question mark on them. This indicates that they're supposed to be "mystery" blocks, the original idea being that when playing the games for the first time, you were never supposed to know what the block will have.

Explanation The sound effect accompanying each deaths of Mario, starting from the very first game, has been synonymous with 'amusing/silly' deaths in video games and other medias use them to lampoon such concept. Explanation From a demotivator of Super Mario Bros. 3 with Mario trapped between a wall and a Goomba, beneath a ceiling that prevents him from leaping over or on top of it, and his Super Mushroom just out of reach. It also provides the page image for Didn't Think This Through.
    • Mario can kill the Sun. Explanation In two levels of Super Mario Bros. 3, the Sun is visible. In truth, it's actually one of Bowser's men, the Angry Sun, and it makes a point to swoop down and ram Mario. Fortunately, it's not much bigger than Mario, and can be killed by hitting it with a Koopa shell.
      • Congratulations, Mario, you started a new Ice Age. Explanation Slapstick/Cringe Comedy-style sketch shows, such as Dorkly Originals and Oddshow, love to explore the implications of the Sun being destroyed.
  • Super Mario World:
    • SA—DA—MA—SA—SHI—Explanation From an

Automatic Level which gave off these lines for the chords. On Nico Nico Douga, whenever that portion of the song plays, expect these "lyrics" to pop up.
    • Mario heartlessly ditches his faithful companion Yoshi by dropping him into a pit.Explanation In gameplay, Mario can gain extra height by jumping off Yoshi, even if this drops Yoshi into a Bottomless Pit. Platform Hell hacks are particularly known for requiring this.
  • "Obey Wario, DESTROY MARIO
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
!!!" Explanation From a Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins commercial. It proved so popular in its initial airing that the commercial
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
for Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 used the same "hypnotized by Wario" premise even though hypnosis doesn't feature in that game. Hudson Soft used the same premise when advertising Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!. Around the late 2000s/early 2010s, many parodies of the ad featuring other characters were uploaded to YouTube, with most of them being based on this

    rendition featuring Weegee.
  • Super Mario 64:
    • "It's-a me, Mario!"Explanation Mario's opening line on the game's title screen. It has since become one of his catchphrases.
    • "L Is Real 2401"Explanation The fountain in the courtyard, which actually says "A secret star lies here" when uncompressed, was believed to have said "L is Real 2401" and for decades was speculated as a hint to unlock Luigi or that Luigi was originally meant to be in the game. This reached legendary status when, exactly 24 years and 1 month after the game was released, a character model for Luigi was found in leaked source code for the game.
    • Purple Prizes
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Since Luigi is actually playable in the DS remake, other rumors began circulating claiming that this game had a different Secret Character: Waluigi. The fanmade "Purple Prizes" article is the primary source of this, with other rumors such as the black box on Peach's Castle on the file select screen also being associated with Waluigi's rumors.
    • "So long, gay Bowser!" Explanation A memetic mishearing of what Mario says after tossing Bowser off of the boss arena (he actually says "So long-a, Bowser!"). This meme is often used today to criticize corporations
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
for dropping the LGBT flag as soon as Pride Month is over.
      • "Bye bi!" Explanation When Super Mario 3D All-Stars was shown off, one clip contained Mario throwing Bowser... and all he says is "Bye bye!" instead of "So long, King Bowser!", as in the Japan-only Shindou edition of the game and Super Mario 64 DS. In order to keep the spirit of the mishearing "Gay Bowser" alive, people quickly started joking that Mario was actually referencing Bowser being bisexual and saying "Bye bi!" instead.
    • *enters painting* Explanation A popular edit applied to other memes, in which anyone who approaches a wall or floor in the meme will be edited to enter the surface, while the painting ripple effect is applied and a fake mission select screen is added.
    • "YAHOO! YAHOO! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA-" Explanation An iconic soundbite that results from Backwards Long Jump
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, a speedrunning trick that, among other things, makes Mario repeat and interrupt his "Yahoo" dozens of times, which is then proceeded by smashing and flying through scenery at crazy speeds.
      • RIP Backwards Long Jumping Explanation As the 3D All-Stars port seems to be the Shindou edition based on Mario saying "Bye Bye!" instead of "So long-a, Bowser!", this means that the iconic glitch has been fixed.
    • The Mario 64 Iceberg
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊. Explanation A chart from early 2020 ranking various secrets, theories and urban legends concerning Super Mario 64 by obscurity. Many of the examples on there, despite being preexisting memes, gained much wider circulation due to the iceberg, and are discussed below.
      • "1995/07/29 Build (DO NOT RESEARCH)" Explanation The lost Spaceworld 1995 demo, the mysterious nature of which is used as a basis for horror videos that parody the game's conspiracy theories.
      • "The Wario Apparition" Explanation Supposedly an apparition of Wario's disembodied head declaring "You want fun? Wario show you fun!" before he chases Mario down a never-ending hallway and presumably kills him
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
. The imagery of Wario's head and his line both actually originate from a showcase of Nintendo's then-upcoming titles at E3 1996

        .
      • "HMC is the castle's septic system"/"HMC entrance room is a sewer".
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A Toilet Humour-heavy parody of the many infographics showcasing minor details and theories in Mario 64 (most famously the fate of King Bob-omb
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊) which attempts to expose the "truth" about Hazy Maze Cave.
      • "The Bowser Room" Explanation Supposedly a hidden area in the game; a plain grey room with a picture of Bowser (or alternatively, a window with the actual Bowser peering through it) on one of the walls. In reality, this was a joke started by Chris O'Neill of OneyPlays, who put together a fake screenshot of it
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊ when he was in school to try and trick his classmates, which was shown and discussed on the channel
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
in 2017. Due to its inclusion on the deeper layers of the iceberg, it has become a common fixture in Mario 64 conspiracy theories.
      • "Every copy of Mario 64 is personalized." Explanation A theory
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊ that posits all of the urban legends and odd details about the game are the result of Nintendo using an adaptive AI to tailor the experience to fit each individual player, resulting in small differences between every copy. Due to the phrase being the very last thing on the chart, it became one of the most popular and frequently-quoted lines of the whole thing.
  • Super Mario Sunshine:
    • "SHINE GET!" Explanation The Engrish message for picking up a Plot Coupon in the Japanese version of Super Mario Sunshine. Ascended in the American translation of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door when it gets squawked by the parrot in Chapter 4.
    • Sunshine Bowser says: "Mario! HOW DARE YOU DISTURB MY FAMILY VACATION!
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
" Explanation The voice acting in Super Mario Sunshine is widely considered to be hit-or-miss in terms of quality, with this line in particular standing out for coming out of nowhere (rapidly changing the tone of the cutscene up to that point, as though it just remembered that it was supposed to be leading into the Final Boss fight at the last second and tried to switch from "humorous" to "epic" way too quickly) and being delivered somewhat awkwardly. (The fact that it's immediately followed by a stock Kaiju growl (the exact same one used for Bowser's roars in Super Mario 64) that sounds somewhat halfhearted doesn't help.) note The fandom's lukewarm response to the voice acting in Super Mario Sunshine probably goes a long way to explaining Nintendo's decision to switch from voice acting to voice grunting in later Mario titles, including Super Mario Sunshine's direct successors (Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey).
    • "I'm a chuckster!" Explanation Said by the Chucking Piantas in the infamously difficult Pianta Village secret level. Since they throw you immediately after you talk to them, if you positioned Mario poorly, this line becomes a Pre-Mortem One-Liner. It initially gained popularity thanks to Chuggaaconroy's playthrough of Sunshine, but grew even more popular following the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, with a new generation discovering the Pianta Village secret level and making many memes about it.
      • Platforms-a-Plenty!
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation The Ear Wormy acapella song that plays during said Nintendo Hard secret levels, which has become somewhat memetic due to its catchiness clashing with the brutalness of some of the levels.
    • "Mama? Mama Peach? I'm your...Mama?" Explanation The game introduces Bowser Jr., who is under the assumption that Peach is his mother. This is not helped by Peach's above line, which sounds like she has to think about the possibility (which could be attributed to her being confused about the situation). Because of her line delivery and not even refuting Jr. (though the game confirms that Peach didn't give birth to him), many players pointed out that it gave the implication that Peach had sexual relations with Bowser at some point.
  • New Super Mario Bros.:
    • Koopa Troopa DanceExplanation Some TikTok videos that became rather popular use the main theme from the series and have someone act as a Koopa doing some sort of serious event, such as getting divorced or disarming a bomb, only to start dancing when the "bah bah" sound plays like Koopas do in the game.
  • Super Mario Galaxy:
    • U R MR GAY. Explanation An unintentional "hidden" message found by inspecting the boxart/title screen of Super Mario Galaxy and reading the letters that glint with light/a star. It also evolved into U R MR GOTY.
    • You can now play as Luigi. Explanation After beating the game as Mario with all 120 Power Stars collected, you receive a message reading this after the credits roll. It's since become a joke to say that whenever someone reaches the end of something or an area that could be taken as an ending, they'll receive this message (for example, someone being told they can play as Luigi after reaching the end of their lifespan
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊, or reaching the end of 2020 only to hear Mario thank them as he does at the end of the credits
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
      ).
      • You can only play as Luigi. Explanation Following March 31, 2021, the day where Mario is jokingly claimed to meet his end, the meme would then mutate into Luigi replacing Mario as the main character and official mascot of the series, thus granting everyone their wish of being able to play as the former.
    • SOAP! SOAP! SOAP! SOAP! Explanation A mishearing of the Ominous Latin Chanting in the Bowser battle themes in Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel.
    • Luigi talking to Luigi Explanation At some point, it became popular to take an animation of the NPC Luigi talking to the playable Luigi and dub music over it to make it seem like the talking Luigi is singing it.
    • So... chunks, huh?
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A phrase said by a penguin NPC in the game that gained some traction on Tumblr around 2017.
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2:
    • YA I M R U? Explanation Related to "U R MR GAY" above, where the letters with stars on the Super Mario Galaxy 2 logo spell out this phrase, seemingly as a response to the previous one. A less common version of the joke is "U R MI ALY", referring to recurring ally Yoshi appearing in this game.
    • The inclusion of the Spin Drill item in the game prompted a number of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann jokes.
  • Super Mario Maker
    • "You fuckin' make it then if you're so goddamn smart"Explanation A common response by some to people who say their level sucks. Also often jokingly said to be why the game was made in the first place.
  • SM64 - Watch for Rolling Rocks - 0.5x A Presses (Commentated)
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
: An instruction video created by pannenkoek2012, explaining in great detail how a fewest-A-button-presses TAS of a particular Super Mario 64 level works sparked an entire meme set of its own. Most of the concepts are old hat among that particular Challenge Gamer crowd, but this video introduced them to a large number of uninitiated viewers all at once, propelling them into memetic status.
    • Half A press. Explanation The second half, specifically. The idea of a run pressing the A button "half" a time seems odd, but if the first half of the press was used just prior to entering the level, it saves a press overall.
      • T.J. "Henry" Yoshi.Explanation Near the start of the video, Pannenkoek shows screenshots of several Youtube commenters taking issue with the idea of a "half A press." Henry's comment in particular ("an a press is an a press. You can't say its only a half", from Pole-Jumping for Red Coins - 0.5x A Presses
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
) was singled out. He's jokingly portrayed as Pannenkoek's/Mario's ineffectual nemesis.
    • Scuttlebug Transportation Explanation The Scuttlebug's AI allows its position to be manipulated by first deliberately letting it hit Mario several times, then taking a strange sequence of movements just outside the room it's in. This ends up being relevant at the very end of the route for a Goomba Springboard boost.
      • Scuttlebug Jamboree Explanation The narrator mentions you can't bring Scuttlebugs through doors, and jokingly says that if your dream was to bring all the Scuttlebugs together for a "Jamboree", you can't. The phrase "Scuttlebug Jamboree" is just a funny phrase, and has some nice memetic fame. Also, the narrator shows a clip of all the Scuttlebugs in the main room, but isn't that supposed to be impossible? (Answer: Yes, unless you directly edit RAM to put them there. Doing it that way is easy.)
    • But first, we need to talk about parallel universes. Explanation Due to an oddity in collision detection, the level terrain repeats every 65536 distance units. The repeating terrain is so far away from the original that it's only accessible with glitches, and only comes up in weird corner cases like this, so it's called a "parallel universe". The segue into this discussion in the video gained a memetic status all its own.
    • QPU aligned Explanation Since the game checks collision four times per frame, it's easiest to traverse parallel universes four at a time — Quadruple Parallel Universe. Since you need to get back to the original universe to finish the level, being a multiple of 4 universes away in each cardinal direction makes it easiest to return, and is called "QPU aligned". The reason this needs to be taken into consideration is that sometimes a route will take you out of "QPU alignment", so now you need to find a way back in…
    • Hyper Speed Walking Explanation How parallel universes are accessed (without using the Backwards Long Jump, which obviously requires pressing A). Walking backwards in certain unusual circumstances will cause Mario to build up negative speed indefinitely, which can then be used to fling him through the terrain and into a parallel universe.
    • De facto speed Explanation The "distance Mario moves each frame" isn't necessarily equal to his "speed". Slopes in Super Mario 64 lazily cut Mario's effective speed in accordance with their angle, but without regard to actual direction of movement and without changing the "speed" variable in memory. They mostly got away with it because if you're running straight up or down the slope, it looks just fine, but it has a significant effect on Hyper Speed Walking routes.
    • 12 HOURS Explanation Since Hyper Speed Walking is only doable on slopes too steep to stand on, the first step requires spending a ridiculous amount of time building up speed. Since runs of this type are scored by lowest A-presses first, and actual time second, this is deemed Worth It.
  • Super Mario Odyssey: Has its own page.
  • Super Mario Maker 2
    • "There, we added slopes. Now can you guys shut up and stop whining about it?!"Explanation Literally the first new feature revealed for the game were slopes, which were memetic for being absent in the first game.
    • The Wii U KillerExplanation Up until the trailer for Super Mario Maker 2 released, the original game was the only reason some users had held on to their Wii U consoles. After the trailer dropped, many joked that it was time to take the Wii U off its life support since they now had no incentive to keep it anymore.
    • Boom Boom is a mad lad. Explanation Boom Boom was referred to as a "mad lad," already a memetic phrase
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
, in the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct.
    • Extra Game Styles Explanation After the May 2019 Direct of Super Mario Maker 2 showed off a suspicious empty space next to the Super Mario 3D World style under this header, which is thought to imply multiple special game styles, fans decided to Photoshop several unlikely new styles such as Minecraft or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (here
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
      ).
    • "Embiggen them with a Super Mushroom..." from the second Direct.
    • "Heya, Big Bro! If you're having trouble with a course, use some assist parts!"
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Adding Luigi's Annoying Video Game Helper prompt to a set of instructions, signs, or illustrations that shows how to do something, how not to do something, or provides an example of Epic Fail.
    • The Indifferent Sun Explanation A Fan Nickname given to the Angry Sun in the New Super Mario Bros. U style, where it doesn't look as angry as the older styles, instead looking like it's contemplating life.
    • Sans Eraser Explanation Mr. Eraser has a blue/white color scheme, somewhat violent tendencies, and a monologue on morality, all of which quickly led to Undertale fans comparing him to resident Fountain of Memes Sans.
    • Koopa Car Horn Explanation Specifically, the fact that the horn sounds identical to the infamous MLG airhorn sound.
    • [part] Gang Explanation  For reasons unknown, a popular comment is to just take the gizmo, enemy or the like where you're standing and make a comment that adds "gang" to it, and that's all. May be to invoke Interface Screw, especially on speedrun levels.
    • Bowser in a box. Explanation A negative way of referring to the common boss fight setup of a Bowser in a single room with infinitely spawning fire flowers. Not only is it non-threatening thanks to the infinitely spawning powerups, but it's also incredibly tedious since Bowser (especially giant Bowser) soaks up fireballs like nobody's business. The boxes are often hastily scrawled without taking advantage of scroll stop, so the background can be seen outside of the box and the camera freely scrolls around as Mario moves. While this was a common thing in SMM1 too, the increased player count of SMM2 has made this setup even more extremely prevalent.
    • say sike right now Explanation An image of a sleeping Blue Piranha Creeper with the phrase above it, used to convey shock over an off-putting revelation.
    • minecraft; the way home Explanation The name of a completely nonsensical level
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
that ended up being played by Alpharad during a playthrough of Endless Challenge on Easy difficulty. It quickly took off in the Mario Maker scene because of just how little the name of the level has to do with the actual level itself.
    • 1-1 with a twist Explanation While recreating the classic world 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. is not uncommon in Mario Maker, this meme is named after one of the most infamous examples from the creator YTSunny: a level where the only change is the presence of fire bars everywhere. This level has since become popular fodder on both Twitter and Youtube, with creators like videogamedunkey and James Rolfe making videos of them playing it. It even garnered its own entry on KnowYourMeme.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
    • The Slider anti-softlock room Explanation A common feature in troll levels is for the creator to trap someone in a room with no way of escaping save for figuring out a complex contraption that kills the player, while often having to avoid a stream of infinite powerups which resets the player's progress. A large number of these use the secret slide music from Super Mario 64 to drive the player mad on top of being frustrated that they can't kill themself.
    • WAHOO! Explanation One of the predefined messages you can send in multiplayer is this. For some reason, it's primarily used to be sarcastic; for example, if you die in a silly way, or the level's poorly designed, or the match is incredibly laggy, you can call it a WAHOO moment and drop one of these.
    • "Nice work." Explanation One of the messages you can send. Because of its ambiguity, it gets used for both genuine and sarcastic moments of praise.
    • Lemmy's balls Explanation  During experimentation videos with the 3.0 parts, a popular question was to see how Lemmy Koopa's projectiles interacted with various other Parts. However, since the projectiles in question are giant inflatable bouncy balls, fans started referring to them as "Lemmy's balls" when proposing an experiment (i.e "Can Lemmy's balls push down a P-Switch?") It's not hard to figure out why they refer to them as such.
    • "Remember the Snake Block?" Explanation A phrase uttered in the Super Mario Maker 2 direct, followed by a long extended silence. Became a minor meme among fans shortly after.
    • Little Timmy Explanation It's become somewhat popular to refer to really poor quality levels, particularly those with things just spread everywhere and no coherent theme, as "Little Timmy levels" or "levels made by little Timmy", as a tongue-in-cheek reference to how said levels are presumably made by young kids who don't know any better. In instances where good levels are actually made by literal children, they're sometimes endearingly referred to as "Big Timothy".
    • "Nintendo, hire this man!" Explanation Whenever someone makes a really good level, fanmod, or custom song and posts it on YouTube, expect the comments section to say this phrase, or some variation thereof. Due to the prevalence of this comment, it's also used ironically for levels that are really, really bad.

    Mario Kart series

  • "HI, I'M DAISY!" Explanation This is Daisy's line for when she switches from the driver position or when she finishes a race in 1st place in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Despite the line never really appearing anywhere else in the franchise, the sheer repetitiveness in this game alone made it a memetic given. Most people jokingly think this is all she says.
  • Rosalina is fat. Explanation Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii was the first ever female heavyweight racer, and has consistently been in the heavier weight classes. This is likely merely because of her great height rendering her unable to fit in normal-sized karts. The general heftiness of heavyweight racers has since memetically mutated "tall" into "fat".
  • Luigi's Death Stare. Explanation Mario Kart 8 has the characters stare at opponents they go past, but Luigi's is rather notable for looking sinister when he does it. This video
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
with Chamillionaire's Ridin' playing in the background popularized it, which even found its way onto FOX News.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
    • This later spawned a daughter-meme when crossbred with Eurobeat (and Initial D): Luigi's Drift Stare
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
      .
  • Get Mario Kart'd Explanation The term originates from an infamous video
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
that had Daisy getting bombarded by multiple items, as well as getting bumped off the bridge of DK Mountain by other racers, resulting in her going from first place to dead last. The term has since been used to mock the often unpredictable and unfair nature of the games.
  • WELCOME TO MARIO KART! Explanation  From the starting screen of Mario Kart 64, commonly used used when someone gets bombarded by multiple items, especially if you end up going from first place to dead last at the last moment via Blue Shell. This is frequently used alongside the aforementioned "Get Mario Kart'd" meme.
  • A common trend in the Mario Kart community is to mock filler characters like Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina with other, ridiculous character names like Blue Silver Diddy Kong or Doctor Metal Baby Tanooki Mario. This trend has even begun to spread to the Super Smash Bros. community, due to the inclusion of Dark Pit.
  • "I'm using tilt controls!" Explanation One of the premade messages to tell to other people in a lobby in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this one is frequently used to express frustration. Origins are unclear, but most likely it derives from the tilt penalty in pinball, in which the ball immediately ends if the player is too rough on the machine. It caught on shortly after the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, to where people who actually use tilt controls and use this message for its intended meaning get misinterpreted for the memetic meaning.
  • FUCK THE POLICEExplanation From a rather popular gif
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
◊ of a Mario Kart Wii player dodging a Spiny Shell, which then pauses to display the caption "FUCK THE POLICE". This was before Mario Kart 8 introduced the Super Horn, which negates most items, including the Spiny Shell.
  • 121 kn
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
videos, while only showing their playthrough on time trial, became memetic due to their ridiculously concise titles which make them impossible to search on a web browser and only make them appear on YouTube recommendations.
  • Where's Luigi? Explanation Mario Kart Tour has a rather large ensemble of playable characters, ranging from perfect-attendance members like Mario and Bowser, to less frequent but still popular characters like Diddy Kong and Dry Bones, to mostly weird or unexpected choices like Peachette and Pauline. However, one noticeable omission from the base game's roster was Mario's very own brother Luigi, who somehow managed to be excluded from the game in spite of four forms of Mario, two forms of Peach and Daisy, and two characters who haven't been in a single Mario Kart game prior to this all managing to make it in at launch. Luigi wouldn't show up until late October of 2019, a little less than a month after the game released.
  • $40 Diddy Kong Explanation While Mario Kart Tour is generally seen as an average-to-alright mobile game, one thing was widely seen as a complete joke: Diddy Kong, in addition to being available through a regular gacha method, was also available in a pack that cost a grand total of forty dollars. The fact that a mobile game has a single character that costs this much money was treated with derision at best. Many people, similar to the $1000 iPhone stand meme, pointed out several other things that you could get for the same price or cheaper, with the meme even getting a Twitter account
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
dedicated to it, and led to more variants such as the Fire Emblem Heroes Feh Pass subscription service and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Later became a Discredited Meme as the $40 Diddy was only a limited time offer and the 90 rubies, a premium currency, were the main value to its expensive pack, with Diddy as a bonus. Despite this, this meme has been widely talked about in the general Nintendo fandom when in a topic on mobile microtransactions.
  • It's very common to find people declaring the Spiny Shell a destroyer of dreams.
  • A common response to people saying First! is to send a Spiny Shell at them.
  • A common nickname for Mario Kart Wii is "Funky Bike Wii" due to the Game Breaking combo of Funky Kong on the Flame Runner.
  • BAM! SHOCK DODGE! Explanation A common reaction when avoiding a Lightning from hitting the character, killing their momentum. Originates from this video

  • "Hey Nintendo, we want Mario Kart 9." "Here, do it yourself."Explanation Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is an AR game for the Switch that allows you to use Mario and Luigi kart toys with cameras attached in order to race around your very own home using peripherals. Fans have been awaiting for MK9 since 8 got a port for the Switch instead of a new game. Jokes circulated about Nintendo being lazy and their solution to this problem is to let fans make MK9 themselves.
  • Based on a popular meme:

Kid: Mom, can we have Mario Kart?
Mom: We have Mario Kart at home.
Mario Kart at home:Explanation Also following the AR game announcement, many were quick to notice the parallels between this popular meme and Nintendo simply making fans make their own Mario Kart at home instead of actually developing a new one.

Explanation In Mario Kart 8, one of the tricks Donkey Kong can pull off while riding a bike or an all-terrain is posing with one arm out and his head covered by his fist while looking to the right, very reminiscent of a dab. This was not unnoticed by the community.
  • The Coconut Mall music

    • You just got Coconut Malled! Explanation A Bait-and-Switch meme where people are tricked into listening to the Coconut Mall theme.
  • Mario Says Spongebob
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A video of Mario exclaiming something in Mario Kart Wii, which the uploader interprets as "SpongeBob". It suddenly burst in popularity nearly a decade after its release thanks to the YouTube algorithm recommending it to many people, with the "discuss" text at the end becoming especially memetic, being seen as more of a threat or something in a class assignment than an actual call to discuss something.

    Mario Party series

  • Bowser Communism. Explanation One of the possible outcomes of the Bowser Space is "Bowser Revolution", in which Bowser distributes everyone's coins evenly. Political references follow quickly. The term itself was popularized by The Runaway Guys.
  • D'OH, I MISSED! Explanation One of Wario's failure quotes in the first two N64 games (except in the original NTSC-J version, where instead he says "Oh my god!"). It's almost never appropriate in context. Once again, popularized by The Runaway Guys. According to his voice actor Thomas Spindler, he's actually saying "So ein Mist!", German for (roughly) "Oh, shoot!"

Explanation The AI in the Mario Party series is so bad on lower difficulties or the minigames can be so luck-based that there are some minigames that the player can win without any controller input. It's traditional for the player's character to be Luigi while demonstrating this. This meme crossed over into Super Smash Bros. — people have even managed to have Luigi win by doing absolutely nothing against level 9 CPUs!
  • You're lousy! Explanation Waluigi's unlockable taunt in Mario Party 6 and Mario Party 7. This time, popularized by pokecapn's posse.
  • Mario Party has somehow developed a memetic reputation for destroying friendships. Not as bad as Dokapon Kingdom, but still.
  • Very Hard DK
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A picture of an AI-controlled Donkey Kong with his difficulty set to "Very Hard". Given Donkey Kong's memetic association with dongs, the implication is clear. This sees use as a reaction image for when someone is incredibly excited or aroused, or just to refer to things that are actually hard (literally, or difficulty-wise).
  • PIRACY IS NO PARTY! Explanation A video

showing off a fake anti-piracy screen in Mario Party DS, which has a picture of all of the playable characters in a cage (taken from the scene of Bowser trapping them in the game's story mode) with the above phrase on it, as well as surprisingly good music
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
. This has spawned a ton of other fake copy protection videos, often with the characters telling the player off for pirating the game, and to report and/or destroy the game, potentially with Nightmare Fuel added in for good measure.
  • give me the ball papa
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation A rather popular video of the "Sort of Fun" minigame from Super Mario Party, where Bowser Jr. gestures with his hands to plead with his father to give him a baseball. He doesn't, and Jr. looks at the camera incredulously just before Bowser drops the baseball in the wrong basket.
  • Sad Mario

Explanation A screenshot from Super Mario Party showing Mario slumping dejectedly (used in games starting in Mario Party 9 when he gets a bad outcome, like losing Coins). This would lead to this being a popular reaction image.

    Mario RPG series

  • Super Mario RPG:
    • And you guys better watch out! He Knows About Timed Hits! Explanation If you refuse the tutorial on timed hits in the game, Toad will proudly boast that Mario knows all about it to a Goomba.
    • Whoa, who do you think you are, Bruce Lee? You can't just go in there, fists flying!
    • I serve... A higher authority... Explanation When Geno begins fighting Bowyer, he says this line when asked about his affiliations by the latter.
    • His real name is "♡♪!?"Explanation When you first meet Geno, he gives his real name as a series of unpronounceable symbols. This meme is a parody of that bit of dialogue.
    • Chained Kong, a prisoner of war.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Its exact origin is unknown, but outside of the games, this is always said whenever Chained Kong appears.
    • SLEDGE Explanation (spoilers) During the first phase of the final battle, Smithy tends to use this attack quite often. This quote is often accompanied by a description of the "Sledge" attack, where a wooden pillar crushes the player's entire party.
    • You Just Got Hey Stinky'd!Explanation A troll video
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta

(Super Mario 64's "Slider" played to the tune of Iyaz's "Replay".) while standing over the eponymous phrase.
  • Paper Mario 64:
    • Hitting this Block for 416 Years Crashes Paper Mario
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation No, really. Hitting that block up to 100 times spawns up to 3 treasure blocks as an Easter Egg; hitting it for 416 years would (theoretically) crash the game by repeatedly overflowing the counter that tracks that and spawning more blocks than the engine can accommodate. Stryder7x did the math, including accounting for lag. There's just something inherently amusing about a crash bug that takes four centuries to perform.
    • [Innocuous Thing] Crashes Paper MarioExplanation After the popularity of the above video, Stryder7x released more videos demonstrating crash glitches, all with their title in the same format. Naturally, this led to streams of jokes about any possible thing crashing the game.
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door:
    • I was at Riverside Station and did not expect such a profound statement from Goombella. Explanation An inside joke from the Paper Mario subreddit. This phrase originated from a post with screengrabs of a poetic line from the game. Others started replacing Goombella's dialogue with all manner of other statements, leading to a surge of dozens of Riverside Station posts.
    • Great, just great. Now I look like the huge, mighty king of GUYS WHO TALK TO POSTERS! Explanation Bowser mistakes a poster of Peach to be the real person. He's quite embarrassed when he realizes his mistake.
    • Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass when Explanation During the events of TTYD, Luigi is on a different adventure concurrent to Mario's that occurs offscreen, which you only get to hear snippets of from him and his partners (plus a highly exaggerated book series). Many people have latched on to this great offscreen adventure and genuinely want Nintendo to release a game where you get to play through it.
    • Doo_liss Explanation Doopliss removes the letter "p" from the keyboard in order to prevent you from guessing his name before you're intended to (after Vivian joins Mario). Because of this, when he comes up in a text-based discussion, people will occasionally replace every instance of that letter with an underscore, as if he took it off of their keyboards as well.

    • Mr. L! Green Thunder! Explanation Luigi's Brainwashed and Crazy alter-ego in Super Paper Mario.
      • Who could Mr. L be? Explanation Mr. L looks glaringly like Luigi. The obvious next step is denying this connection and looking for a different person who could potentially be him. Even Super Smash Bros. in the fourth game.
    • DOOFUSES!!! Explanation For all of her Body Horror, Mimi, a recurring bad guy in Super Paper Mario, has some pretty childish insults.
    • "I love going on message boards and complaining about video games I've never played!" Explanation One of the questions you answer "Yes" to, in a quiz in Super Paper Mario, you can expect to see this pop up whenever people... well, complain about games they've never played.
    • GREEEEEEN! Explanation The very first thing the final boss of Super Paper Mario does upon assuming his form is say this. It's completely out of place and random.

    • The Super Paper Mario .gif war
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation For reasons unknown, starting in 2021 gif-hosting sites like Tenor became a battleground when "The Anti-SPM Association" flooded the site with dozens of "black text white background random footage" gifs criticizing the game and people who enjoyed it, prompting people who did enjoy the game to counter with their own gifs. • The Tower Power Pokey's boss themeExplanation The theme that plays during the Tower Power Pokey's boss fight was used in a Rule 34 Animal Crossing animation. Due to this, as well as the relatively low popularity of Sticker Star itself, this theme became quite notorious. This video

      • PEDAL STOOL
    • Mario x Wendy Explanation Wendy's defeat quote sounds like she's flirting with Mario.
    • Blinded by Salt and Pepper Explanation The Salt and Pepper Thing has this description when used. Since "salt" is used to refer to disappointment-fueled anger, the defenders of Color Splash use it to make fun of the game's detractors.
    • Everyone is a Toad Explanation Often used by the game's detractors to call attention to the prevalence of the Toad species.
    • Swoopposting Explanation A developer oversight led to an unwinnable gameplay situation where Kamek replaces all of Mario's battle actions with Eekhammers as he is fighting a Swoop enemy. The hammer attacks have no effect on the flying Swoop. Mario cannot flee the battle until he has wasted all of his cards, and merely shrugs after each attack fails to connect. Users of the Paper Mario subreddit read this as poor game design, and had a field day editing the trinity of Kamek, Swoop, and Eekhammer into various situations.

    • Oh. Luigi came too. Super. Explanation In the introduction to Bowser's Inside Story, a Toad tells Mario about the meeting to discuss the Blorb epidemic, then realizes that Luigi also came with him. It sees use in those situations where someone you like is accompanied by someone you don't really care for, or just to poke fun at Luigi being late to things.

    • This sounds like a Kingdom Hearts theme. Explanation The music of the Mario & Luigi games is composed by Yoko Shimomura, who is most famous for the music from Kingdom Hearts. It's fairly obvious, especially with the final boss themes for the later games.
    • *made up gibberish* potato Explanation Mario's medium length "talking" soundbyte in Bowser's Inside Story has been subjected to many mishearings, but nearly everyone can agree that it ends in "potato".

  • Mario's floating disembodied head from Mario Teaches Typing 2, which has seen much use in YouTube Poop.
    • His floating disembodied head from Super Mario 64 also counts, though for different reasons, such as stretching and messing around with it or corrupting the game to produce silly or strange-looking faces.
  • PUSH START TO RICH
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Dian Shi Ma Li (Mario Lottery), one of the early unlicensed NES games, had this little gem thrown at you whenever you hit the jackpot. It's not the Start button you've got to press, though, because it's actually B.
    • Fortran. Explanation A half-Captain Ersatz of Mario from the same game. Was given such a name because of a Dummied Out and the letter "F" on his cap. He barely moves. While not as popular as characters like Weegee, Fortran was somewhat big in the YouTube Poop community, with "PUSH START TO RICH" almost always being referenced whenver he made an appearance.
    • FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY Explanation What this game's "copyright screen" says, pointing out that you get no real money for playing this game of roulette.Origin of This Phrase The phrase "For Amusement Only" was an agreed-upon phrase among manufacturers of arcade games, pinball machines, and other parlor machines. It originated at a time when the United States had very strict gambling laws (as in destroy-on-sight levels of enforcement), and when written on the machine, informs authorities that the machine does not give prizes or cash payouts. This phrase is still in use today, albeit rare because it's become increasingly obvious what's a gambling device and what isn't.
    • GRAND DAD Explanation A Vinesauce stream featured 7 Grand Dad, a hack of The Flintstones: The Rescue Of Dino & Hoppy that had a recolor of the Fortran sprite (from bootleg NES game Dian Shi Ma Li) on its title screen. It became a popular running gag on SiIvaGunner rips, and also led to the clip of Joel saying "GRAND DAD" being used out of context in some memes.
  • Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Peach is a "Badass Princess". Explanation A leaked document had Peach referred to, amongst other things, as "the badass princess". It was never meant to be shown to the public, only to Ubisoft executives. The phrase was initially used to describe why the leak was obviously fake — Nintendo wouldn't let any documents call Peach that — but once it was confirmed real, fans took to it because of how funny it was to see something official refer to Peach as "badass".
  • Mario and Luigi are dead! Explanation  After character reveal trailers for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had Mario and Luigi both die, the fanbase decided that, thanks to the lack of onscreen recovery and Offscreen Inertia, they'd been Killed Off for Real. Art, fix-it-fics, and general jokes followed.
    • Luigi is okay. Explanation Nintendo's official response to the above was assuring gamers that Luigi was fine.

    • "DIE :D"
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Mario's Birdie animation from Toadstool Tour has him giving the player a thumbs up. The reaction image covers up the "bir" side of the screen, and is used to tell others to die.
  • DK Dancing Explanation  DK's goal animation in Mario Strikers: Battle League has him bust out dancing out of nowhere, and has started to pick up some traction. It's also often paired with Specialist.

    Super Mario cartoons

  • The last episode of Super Mario World (and the last Mario cartoon ever made), "Mama Luigi". The entire episode (especially the line, "That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario! *wheeze*") has become a staple of YouTube Poop videos. The most quotable lines from the episode include:
    • "Well, like they say in Brooklyn, early to bed, early to catch the worm. Or, is it the bagel?"
    • "Koopa Koopa football players" Explanation "Koopa football players" are what the cartoon calls Chargin' Chucks. Many YouTube Poops used a clip of the phrase from this episode with the first word repeated.
    • "A fiyah Sumo!" (actually, it's a Sumo Bro)
    • "I Fell for Hours!"
    • "BOOOIIILING lava!"
    • "Good thing I found a MAAAAAAGIC balloon!"
    • "Luigi bash blocks now!"
    • "Yeah, well, I didn't think it was so funny!"
    • "Mario, wherever you are, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYEEEEEEEEEEEELP!"
    • "MAMA!? MAMA LUIGI? AHAHAHAHAHA!"
    • Mario describing Bowser's Castle as his "Coney Island disco palace!"
    • "Augh, now I know how a meatball feels!" Explanation After being accidentally swallowed by Yoshi, Mario proclaims this while temporarily inside of his stomach, although technically speaking, this cannot be true.
  • "This is a volcano!" Explanation Hip/Lemmy Koopa describes his show-and-tell project.
  • "AND IT'S ALL MY FAULT!"
  • "Permit me to introduce ya to... RACCOOOOOOOON KOOPA!!"
    • Ascended as of Super Mario 3D Land (not word for word, but the mere concept).
  • "C'mon, I'll help you sink your teeth into some delicious KOOOOOOOOOPAmeat!"
  • "Do the Mario!" Explanation The credits theme for The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! is fairly popular in memes, whether it be randomly incorporating the song into other videos/songs, or pointing out that "The Mario" is essentially just walking, due to the lyrics "Swing your arms from side to side/Take one step and then again" describing the action.
    • The German version too, given that it can produce vulgar mishearings

      .
  • "It's a stone, Luigi. You didn't make it!"
    • "It's a football! I chiseled it!"
    • "It's even official size! (throws at Mario) But not official weight..."
  • "What's the one thing most likely to rot people's minds and reduce their brains to mashed potatoes?"
  • (reading a phone bill) "ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY FIVE DOLLARS AND THIRTY ONE CENTS?!" *Mario faints*
  • "Oogtar eat ghosts for breakfast!"
    • Mutated by Youtube into "Oogtar eat [item] for breakfast!"

  • "Luigi, I'm home!"
  • "FIYABAWLS? YUM!" Explanation  Yoshi's delivery of the line
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
'Fireballs? Yum!' earned a meme by its sheer ridiculousness. Spread further by JoshJepson.
    • FIYAYUM'S BALLS!
  • "No duck here, turkey!"
    • Often mutated into "No [item] here, turkey!"
  • "Oh fuck you Luigi."
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Mario's actually saying "Oh, thank you, Luigi" (the official subtitles, for some reason, give it as "Oh, and what about you, Luigi?"), but most people misheard it as "Oh, fuck you, Luigi."
  • *Pizza Time stops*
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
Explanation Spun off of the "Jazz Music Stops" meme, a still shot of Luigi cooking pizza with open flames while sporting an angry furrowed expression is often used as a reaction image to convey disgust.
  • Luigi's chinese cowboy impression is so offensive that Mario's stomach ulcer practically explodes and he is unable to ask luigi to stop being so fucking racist.
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
  • "And if you do drugs, you go to Hell before you die. Please." Explanation While not necessarily from the cartoon, this comes from an anti-drug PSA from Captain Lou Albano, who was Mario's voice actor at the time and dons the plumber's hat in the clip. The line quickly became a popular subject for quotation and parody thanks to the jarring contrast between the upbeat tone of the Mario series and the melodramatically dark nature of the line.
  • "If you're not watching The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, you're gonna turn into a Goomba!" Explantion  A commercial

  • "This is the male penis and testicles" Explanation  A line uttered by Luigi in a fan-made satirical sex-education video
Mario the man vs Mario the idea copypasta
featuring the Mario Bros and Kevin from Captain N. It quickly went viral due to a mix of the sheer absurdity of Luigi talking about reproductive organs, the fact that the voice actor didn't even try to imitate the Brooklyn accent Luigi had in the cartoons, and the fact that a large chunk of viewers didn't realize it was fake.
    • "Hello Mario." Explanation  The first line from Luigi's in the same video. The contrast between Luigi's deadpan, unaccented voice and Mario, whose voice actor was at least trying to imitate the cartoon voice, made for quick meme fodder.
  • "Here's-a my brother Luigi to give you a whole heapin' spaghetti pile of in-for-ma-shee-oh-nay!" Explanation  Mario's line directly before the above. The contrast between it and the simple "Hello Mario" is magnified by Mario's gratuitous insertion of "spaghetti", weird pronunciation of "information", and overall how this line makes him sound drunk with how he slurs his words.
