The red means I love you Genius

Do you use TikTok? If you do odds are you've heard the song "The Red Means I Love You". The song went viral on TikTok and at the time of writing has over 40,000,000 listens. That's freaking insane! If you're like me though, it may have reminded you of a certain knife wielding psychopath from My Hero Academia. After all, the song was used plenty with people cosplaying as Himiko Toga. I got obsessed with the song, listened to it tons myself and even though it was kind of cool how on Spotify the art with the song even looked like one of Toga's syringes. Then I found out the song actually was about her.

Madds Buckley, the genius behind the song, isn't just an incredibly talented artist, who get her songwriting degree from Berklee College of Music. She's also an anime fan and must be a huge fan of the superhero anime series. Now, I can't confirm this, as I've never spoken to her directly, but you don't make an entire album about something you hate. I mean, I don't think you do. And no, I didn't mistype, there's an entire album of music just like "The Red Means I love You". When I found out that Buckley planned to release an entire album with music inspired by different characters from My Hero Academia, I was thrilled. After all, "The Red Means I Love You" became one of my favorite songs.

Well, the wait is over and Madds Buckley released the anime inspired album, Sunset On Summerville, on April 22, 2022. It's available on Spotify right now, and I can't stress enough that you should go listen to it. That goes for whether you're a My Hero Academia fan or not.

Look, I'm not a musician. I can't sit here and write about the composition, or the melody or... other musical terms. But what I can tell you is that the album is good. Great, actually. Each song is unique, fun and inspired by a different character. The songs are catchy, some are emotional, some are just plain fun. You're bound to find a song you love, and even if you don't check it out anyway. The amount of work, and love and passion that went into this work is absolutely insane. I've listened to the whole thing about a dozen times already and I'm not close to sick of it. 514 days it took to make this, and congratulations Madds Buckley, you knocked it out of the freaking park.

She also composed the music for Erika Harlacher's 300 days, who has voices several popular character such as Ann Takamaki from Persona 5 and Shinobu in Demon Slayer.

So, what's next for Madds Buckley? Well, she's basically famous now and she's taking that fame straight to an upcoming anime convention. If you love her music, and Sunset On Summerville, you can catch her at the Castle Point Anime Convention. She'll be playing a show there, live, and tickets are on sale now!
