In the fourth generation of Pokemon games, the Sinnoh region introduced Pokemon fans to some new Pokemon. A few of those Pokemon were evolved forms of previously added pocket monsters. One such Pokemon was Tangrowth, the evolved form of Kanto-era Pokemon Tangela. To no one’s shock, Tangela and Tangrowth are back for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Here’s how you can evolve Tangela into a much larger and powerful monster.

To evolve a Tangela into a Tangrowth, you will need to first acquire a Tangela. From here, you will need to teach Tangela a Rock-type move. But not just any Rock move, as Tangela will only evolve if you teach it the move Ancient Power.

Tangela learns Ancient Power at Level 24. If you have a Tangela that is Lv. 24 or higher, you will need to go to the Move Tutor at Pastoria City. Here, you will be able to teach Tangela that move, in order to proceed. Keep in mind that in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, learning moves is not free. You will need a Heart Scale in order to teach a move via the Move Tutor.

From here, all you will have to do is to have Tangela increase in level by one, once the Grass-type Pokemon knows Ancient Power. Once Tangela has leveled up, it will involve into Tangrowth.

Pokemon Sword and Shield's first expansion, The Isle of Armor, has reintroduced a ton of old Pokemon back into the fold much to the delight of fans. Many of these Pokemon, however, have interesting methods of evolving them that has given some players trouble. This is true for Tangela's evolution into Tangrowth.

Tangrowth has a unique evolution requirement that sets it apart from other Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Rather than just evolving after Tangela hits a certain level, the player will need to teach Tangela Ancient Power and then level it up. Doing this will cause the Pokemon to evolve into a Tangrowth, at which point the move can be forgotten if desired.

Tangrowth has always had this evolution method, so this case is somewhat different from how to get a Magnezone in Pokemon Sword and Shield, which has changed from its usual method. Nonetheless, getting Ancient Power for a Tangela can be a little bit tricky.

As previously stated, in order to evolve a Tangela into a Tangrowth, the player will need to teach the Pokemon Ancient Power. It seems that Tangela learns Ancient Power from leveling up, meaning players can evolve this Pokemon by simply being patient. Bulbapedia shows that Tangela learns Ancient Power at level 24, although in previous games it was in the early 30's that the Pokemon learned it. Either way, players wanting to get this sooner could attempt to find a Move Tutor and learn the move early.

Finally, if going through the trouble of evolving a Tangela into a Tangrowth is simply too much, the evolved variant wanders the Isle of Armor with relative frequency and can simply be caught outright. Tangrowth's increased stats make it well worth obtaining when compared to a Tangela, so one of these options is likely the best bet. It hasn't been confirmed, but theoretically an Ancient Power TM would work to teach Tangela the move even sooner, but no one has found one yet.

Tangrowth can certainly prove to be a valuable addition to a team, as its high Defense, HP and Physical and Special Attack stats ensure that it can take a hit while still dealing some heavy damage. This, paired with the defensive nature of grass type attacks such as Leech Seed or Giga Drain, make defeating a Tangrowth difficult.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available now for Nintendo Switch.

We've explained how trainers can evolve their Tangela into a Tangrowth in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Trainers can evolve their Tangela into a Tangrowth after the Pokemon knows and is equipped with the move Ancient Power. Pokemon can change their moves at any time, so trainers should be able to both check and change the moves of any captured Tangela whenever they need.

Tangela learns Ancient Power at level 34 and masters it at level 45. We recommend checking any Tangela at level 34 or above to see if it already knows or has Ancient Power selected. If so, simply change its moves or adventure with the Pokemon until the game gives off the indication that the Pokemon is ready to evolve.

Tangela is also known as the "Vine" Pokemon due to its body structure made entirely of vines. No one has ever seen behind the web of foliage that makes up or covers its body. The vines never stop growing and can be broken off painlessly to be regrown by the next day. In some parts of the world, the vines are used as spices for food or as part of medicine poultices. Its Hisuian PokeDex number is #095.

This Pokemon can be found in the Gapejaw Bog in the Crimson Mirelands or at Crossing Slope in the Cobalt Coastlands.

Tangrowth carries over many traits of its pre-evolved form, including the obscuring vines that have regenerative properties. Its arms are actually "vine bundles" that can be used to ensnare targets and bring them closer to the Pokemon. Its Hisuian PokeDex number is #096.
