Top reviews from AustraliaThere was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.Reviewed in Australia on 26 July 2020 Verified Purchase The book has lots of chess problems for people that are new to chess. Very useful! Reviewed in Australia on 31 August 2015 Verified Purchase Reviewed in Australia on 27 February 2019 I own this book and its a bible-sized tomb with thousands upon thousands of chess puzzles, naturally 5,334 to be exact. With the book, all the answers are at the back but using a bookmark it's not too hard to flick from your current puzzle thousands of pages away to to the answers at the rear. Not with this Kindle version. It's another example of where publishers have made no effort to adapt the text file for the book to the practicalities of being on a Kindle. The answers are still at the back, yet there is no hotlink to them and back to the puzzle. The answer is not simply shown on the following page, given that there is no paper cost. Instead you must awkwardly navigate back and forwards across the huge file using Kindle bookmarks. You might maintain a bookmark close to the current answers you are working on, but good luck ever finding your way back to the next puzzle. What would be a great Kindle book for years to come is largely useless because of sloppy work by the publisher. Top reviews from other countries5.0 out of 5 stars Great material for teaching kids. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 August 2017 Verified Purchase This book is of very little use to anybody who can play chess to any decent level, the first third of the book show's the moves and a few rules and then provides hundreds of completely facile mates in one. Not even tricky or interesting mates in one, something completely simple like moving the rook in order to backrank mate a king stood behind his pawns. However, these are great little excersises to give to kids who are just learning to play. My daughter and I have done just 6 of these every night before bed for a week, and it has significantly strengthened her play from almost random to weakly focused, so heading in the right direction. You could easily create a problem like this yourself without the book, but could you create 600 of them without making a mistake? Probably not. The endgame chapter is pretty much the same thing, overkill mates, queening a runaway pawn and so on. Again, great material for kids. For those chapters alone it is worth the price. You also then get a load of sample games And a tonne of mates in 2 and 3. Unfortunately these are not complex enough to provide any calculation training, it is all about pattern recognition. If you are an adult who either wants to learn chess or has just started to learn, if you don't know what a back rank mate is, even if you have played graded chess and your grade is below about 800 elo, then this book will be great for you, below 1200 elo there is probably something in it for you. Above 1200 elo, I would say this is a complete waste money. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for an obsessive young chess player. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2019 Verified Purchase When I saw this I thought it might be ideal for our 12 year old. Certainly enough problems that he can achieve and plenty more for years to come. Probably this year's most successful Christmas present! 4.0 out of 5 stars Recommend! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2015 Verified Purchase Brilliant for the transition form beginners to intermediate player. Massive collection of checkmate problems but the most interesting bit is the combination part. Really enjoyable and excellent teaching reference. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for filling in a small period of time Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2016 Verified Purchase
Lovely book you can grab any time you have a few minutes to kill and you want to brush up on your chess a little. 5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2018 Verified Purchase |
