All-season tires are rated to last anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 miles if properly maintained, inflated, and rotated regularly. Tires will wear significantly faster if you drive aggressively, drive on highly abrasive roadways, or (and this is what kills tires dead faster than anything) your alignment is off, suspension is worn out, or you fail to maintain a rotation schedule.

I was wondering - my tires recently gave me a surprisingly hard time braking down from a relatively low speed. Most "disposable" car components have "change after X km's or Y months" type of schedule, so I was wondering if there is something similar for tires.

A quick Google search gave me ranges from 6 to 10 years, but the sources on those are not great, and my manual doesn't contain any info.

I would always replace them in pairs. If one end is 3/32 and 4/32, and the other end is 4/32 and 5/32, you could replace the 3/32 and 4/32 pair now, and wait a few months on the other two. I'd look for a deal on 4 tires, though. Often there's a "buy 3 get one free" or a big gift card with the purchase of 4 tires that makes doing all 4 at once attractive.

As for how long they last, that depends entirely on the specifics of the tires. "Economy cars" often have cheaper tires with lower tread wear ratings that don't last as long. Look on the sidewall of the tire, and there should be UTQG markings. It will say something like "Treadwear 360 Traction AA Temperature A." The number on the treadwear is an estimate of the useful life of the tire in normal use. Higher numbers should last longer, lower numbers wear quicker. "Street tires" are available with treadwear ratings from 140(ish) to 850(ish).

Unfortunately, the "Treadwear" numbers are extrapolated and (gu)es(s)timated after only 7200 miles of actual wear testing. Comparing numbers within one particular brand of tires is very useful, as the extrapolations and estimates are usually based on the same assumptions. When comparing different brands, the "Treadwear" numbers are significantly less useful due to different assumptions built into the estimates and extrapolations.

I bought a car in 2008 that had new Goodyear Excellence tires. (225/60R16 98W). So they are all 14 years old. Two of them will last for a few more years. I doubt if I can find any tires like that any more. I have not bought any new tires for 40 years!

I am prepared to buy 4 new tires. I see Michelin tyres at a reasonable price. Should I get 2 or 4?

Some people say that tires don't last as long as 12 years. They seem fine, and the testing station doesn't seem to check the age of tires and seem happy with my two with plenty of tread.

I hardly drive at all these days, about 20km a week.. I don't intend to go on long trips, and it never snows here and there's never any ice.

Wear bars will tell you, as well as YOU as the driver. You will know better than anyone if you are loosing traction, slipping and slidding, have no control of the car in adverse weather, etc.

Being 7 years old and with all the mileage, I'm going to make an educated guess and say the need to be replaced.

Tired and breaks should be replaced before they need to be replaced, they are what's keeping you alive.

I've had my car just under 2 years and have driven about 16,500 miles. I'm already due for new tires. I don't drift and I don't do burnouts, but somehow have managed to wear these things down.

Is ~17,000 miles normal for the Bridgestone Potenzas? I was really prepared to hear the price for a set of 4 new tires ($1200+)

I have 113,000km on the clock and they're now in need of replacement. I do run winters from December to April.

That seems really low unless your driving aggressively all the time. Not sure exactly how many miles on my first set since I bought used but around 45k is when I should have changed them. Have about 25k on my new set Goodyear Eagle All Seasons and there not close to replacement yet.

I do drive pretty aggressively. I get up to speed fast on the freeway and love taking drives through the winding mountains that are close by. I'm going to stay away from all season tires since I live in SoCal and it's pretty much always dry here. I think all seasons typically have longer tread life?

Bought my BK2 with 16k on it and the tires were already kind of worn. One owner who did a lot of highway driving.

The potenza's that come with the Gen Coupe are super soft and not long for this world. If you get 20k out of them, you did good. Everyone who I've ever seen mention them talks about their short life.

Your next set of tires will likely last much longer, even performance tires. When I put on my new set (got new wheels), I went with Nitto 555 255/35 and 275/35. So far it's been about 13k miles and there's plenty of tread left, and I do do drive aggressively.

Yeah my potenzas only lasted about 22-25k. Due to the staggered size most tires will have a greatly reduced lifespan from what they advertise.

My rear OEM tires were replaced around 17k miles, and my fronts are about due now at 22k

25k to 30k just put my 3rd set on my 12 about a month ago. First set lasted about a year and a half. Put 30k on it the first 2 years. Stopped driving as much and the second set stretched. Probably should have done them sooner but I hadn't really been driving.
