"Just like other forms of dance, it requires a lot of attention to detail and a high level of skill in order to perform it without injury, and even then injury can occur," says Upstate physical therapist Kelly Meyers.
Can adults compete in Irish dance?Adults may compete in the Oireachtas in Adult Ceili events, there are usually no solo adult competitions at this level. Additionally, adult ceili teams cannot qualify for the World Championships, though they may compete at the North American Nationals.
What is the difference between step dancing and Irish dancing?Stepdance is characterised by the rigid upper body and intricate footwork of its performers. Other forms of solo Irish dance include sean-nós dance, a relaxed and social dance style involving improvised steps, and festival Irish dance, a style which separated from step dance in the mid-20th century.
Can you start Irish dancing at any age? Most people would agree that dancing can be enjoyable at any age. "It's never too late to learn," says Johnny Cronin, owner of the Johnny Cronin School of Irish Dancing in Ireland, who recently certified to be an Irish dance adjudicator.
