Sea Isle City, New Jersey, is an island located in Historic Cape May County on the coast of New Jersey. It's a small community with only one neighborhood, but each of its streets, from 2nd to 93rd, lead to the pristine beaches of this South Jersey Shore location. Charles Kline Landis, one of the early owners of the island, wanted to create a community inspired by his trip to Italy. He loved the country's atmosphere so much that he installed canals and waterways throughout the island, and even had sculptures imported from Europe. As is true for most coastal areas, the Sea Isle City neighborhood sees a boom in its population during the summer months, but once the busyness of the season ends, year-round residents find it a peaceful and quiet place to live.

The Sea Isle City covers a total area of 7.13 sq. km, of which 1.42 sq. km is occupied by water and 5.71 sq. km is occupied by land.  The Sea Isle City is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean along with the Avalon Borough and the Dennis, Middle, and Upper Townships. Since, the Sea Isle City shares land on the Ludlam Island with the unincorporated community of Strathmere, which forms a part of the Upper Township, it is not considered as an “island city”. Rather, the Sea Isle City is a “beach town” where most of its houses are used as second homes or for vacation rentals. The 41st Street also referred to as the John F. Kennedy Blvd serves as the epicenter of this beach town. The Sea Isle City features a 2.4km long promenade that spans the city’s pristine shoreline from 29th Street to 57th Street. In addition to this, the Sea Isle City has about 53.21km of roadways of which 8.90km is maintained by the Cape May County while 44.31km is maintained by the municipality.

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification, Sea Isle City experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and very cold and windy winters. The city has an average high temperature of 17.5°C and an average low temperature of 8.2°C. The Sea Isle City receives year-round precipitation, with February being the snowiest month that also corresponds with high nor’easter activities.  The best time to visit the city is during the warm season from early June to late September.

As per the 2010 census, about 2,114 people live in Sea Isle City. The city’s population has decreased since the 2000 Census, which showed that the Sea Isle City was home to 2,835 people. The city has a population density of 376.30 inhabitants per sq. km. There are also 1,041 households and 646 families that live in the Sea Isle City. The American Community Survey conducted in 2010 also revealed that the median income for a household in the city was $54,175 whereas the median income for a family was $80,219. From July 1, 2007, onwards, the Sea Isle City is governed by a Mayor-Council government system following the Faulkner Act.

The Sea Isle City serves as a popular beach destination and attracts a lot of visitors during the warm season. The tourists can enjoy the city’s pristine sandy beaches, eat food at the local restaurants and participate in fishing, kayaking, parasailing, and other water sports activities in the city’s Townsends Inlet Waterfront Park. In addition to offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, the city’s 2.4km long Promenade also features many arcade centers, boutiques, gift shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. The city’s Excursion Park offers a variety of free entertainment activities including outdoor concerts, movies, festivals, family dance parties, etc. Various annual events like the “Polar Bear Plunge” and the “Sara the Turtle Festival” are held in the Sea Isle City that also attracts a lot of visitors.

In 1882, the Sea Isle City was founded by the South Jersey property developer Charles Kline Landis. On March 31, 1890, the Sea Isle City, which was initially incorporated as a borough was reincorporated. Parts of the Sea Isle City were annexed to the Upper Township in April 1905, while parts of both the Dennis and Upper townships were annexed to the Sea Isle City in March 1907. On April 20, 1907, based on the results of a referendum, the area was reincorporated as the City of Sea Isle City. The Sea Isle City has also been hit by many huge storms and hurricanes that had led to widespread damage in the area. In the later years, along with the neighboring Egg Harbor and Salem Cities, the Sea Isle City became one of the first municipalities in the State of New Jersey that received LED streetlights that have been solely powered by solar and wind energy.
